LG Group opened LG AI Graduate School as an officially approved institute offering government-recognized master’s and doctoral programs, with Chairman Koo Kwang-mo emphasizing the importance of pursuing human-centered technology for candidates.
The school held its entrance ceremony in western Seoul, admitting 11 master’s and six doctoral candidates from various LG affiliates as its inaugural class.
In a letter to the new students, Koo expressed the group’s commitment to developing AI experts who can explore the potential of human talent, stating that technology should be a tool that brings smiles and is oriented toward people.
He added that failure is a sign of seeking better solutions and pledged strong support so candidates are not discouraged, enabling them to unleash imagination and ensure the technologies developed meet the world’s needs.
Koo also presented LG Electronics’ Gram laptops to the candidates.
The program, approved by the Ministry of Education, offers practical AI application training for LG Group employees, with 8 from LG Electronics, 3 from LG Energy Solution, 2 from LG Innotek, 2 from LG Display and 2 from LG Chem enrolled.
The LG AI Graduate School provides a one-year master’s program and a doctoral program of at least three years, with full tuition support, and requires doctoral candidates to publish papers in journals indexed in SCI or SSCI for graduation. Degrees awarded are in AI.
The curriculum emphasizes practical AI development and application, including foundation model development and hands-on research across domains such as language, vision, data intelligence, and materials and bio intelligence.
Lee Hong-lak, president of the school and LG AI Research, called the launch a meaningful milestone as the first instance of a company running an academic degree program, and pledged top-tier education to train AI leaders who address real-world industry challenges.
LG Group has pursued broader AI expansion across its businesses and society, guided by the belief that human talent drives technological innovation and national competitiveness. Since establishing LG AI Research in 2020, the group has supported its growth as a hub for tackling global challenges.
Other initiatives include LG Discovery Lab, which provides free AI education to tens of thousands of teenagers annually, and LG Aimers, a four-year program offering hands-on AI problem-solving experience for jobseekers.
LG AI Graduate School was established in 2022 to train LG employees and received approval last year to offer master’s and doctoral degrees.

LG 그룹은 LG AI 대학원이 western Seoul의 Magok 캠퍼스에서 입학식을 열고 첫 학사 11명과 박사 6명을 Different LG 계열사에서 선발해 첫 입학생으로 받았다고 밝혔다. 신입생들에게 보낸 편지에서 구 회장은 AI 전문가를 양성해 인간 잠재력의 가능성을 탐구하겠다는 그룹의 의지를 표명했다. 구 회장은 편지에서 “기술은 사람들에게 미소를 가져다주는 도구가 되어야 하며 결국에는 사람을 향하도록 만들어야 한다”고 말했다. “실패는 우리가 해답을 찾고 있으며 혁신을 향한 가장 정직한 길임을 증명한다. 후보자들이 실패에 의해 낙담하지 않고 상상력을 충분히 발휘할 수 있도록 우리가 강력히 지원하겠다. 여기에서 창출된 기술이 세계에 도달하도록 할 것”이라고도 밝혔다. 또한 구 회장은 후보들에게 LG전자의 최신 그램 노트북을 선물했다. 교육부의 교육 기관으로 승인된 이 대학원은 LG 그룹 직원들에게 실용적 AI 적용 교육을 제공한다. LG전자에서 여덟 명, LG에너지솔루션에서 세 명, LG이노텍에서 두 명, LG디스플레이에서 두 명, LG화학에서 두 명이 참여했다. LG AI 대학원은 1년제 석사 과정과 최소 3년의 박사 과정으로 구성되며 전액 학비를 지원한다. 박사 과정 후보자는 SCI(E)에 등재된 저널에 논문을 게재해야 졸업 요건을 충족한다. 졸업 시 AI 학위를 받게 된다. 교과 과정은 기초 모델 개발 및 AI를 적용할 수 있는 산업 분야에서의 실무 개발과 활용에 중점을 두며, 언어, 비전, 데이터 인텔리전스, 재료 및 생체 인텔리전스 등에서의 연구 경험을 포함한다. LG AI 대학원 원장 이홍락은 기업이 학위 프로그램을 운영하는 첫 사례로서 의미 있는 이정표라고 말했다. 이 원장은 “학교가 학문적 기여를 넘어 산업 현장의 실제 문제를 해결하는 AI 리더로 성장할 수 있도록 최고 수준의 교육을 제공하기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다. LG 그룹은 구 회장의 철학 아래 인재가 기술 혁신을 이끌고 세계를 바꾸며 궁극적으로 국력의 원천이 된다고 보며 AI 역량 확장을 위해 그룹 내외로 노력해 왔다. 2020년 LG AI 연구소를 설립할 때 구 회장은 이 연구소를 세계의 가장 어려운 도전에 도전할 수 있는 최우수 인재와 파트너가 모이는 곳으로 개발하겠다고 약속했다. 이 방향하에 LG 그룹은 LG 디스커버리 랩을 운영해 학생들에게 체험형 AI 교육을 제공하고 있으며, 이 프로그램은 매년 서울과 부산의 3만 3천 명이 넘는 청소년에게 무료 AI 교육을 제공해 왔다. 또한 LG는 4년째 LG 에이머스(LG Aimers)라는 구직자 대상 훈련 프로그램을 운영하며 AI를 활용해 실제 문제를 해결하는 실무 경험을 제공하고 있다. LG AI 대학원은 2022년 LG 직원들을 위한 AI 교육 기관으로 설립되었으며 지난해 교육부의 승인을 받아 석사 및 박사 학위 과정을 제공하게 되었다.
