Korean speed skaters participated in an open training session at the Taeneung International Rink in Seoul on January 8, as the national team gears up for the Winter Olympics.
The team will be divided into two groups during the final stages of their preparation. Some skaters will compete in an upcoming international event while others will remain in Korea to continue training.
Sources indicate that Kim Min-sun, a medal hopeful in the women's 500 meters, and Kim Jun-ho, the national record holder in the men's 500m, will take part in the International Skating Union Speed Skating World Cup event in Inzell, Germany, starting next Friday. They are set to leave for Germany on Sunday before heading to Italy for the Winter Olympics, which open on February 6.
Meanwhile, Lee Na-hyun, a rising star in the women's 500m, will stay in Korea to prepare for her Olympic debut. Also remaining in Korea are mass start medal contenders Chung Jae-won and Park Ji-woo, who will compete in their respective events.
With Olympic quota spots already allocated after four World Cup races, the fifth World Cup event in Inzell will miss some top competitors. Nonetheless, Kim Min-sun and Kim Jun-ho opted to participate for competitive experience leading into the Olympics.
Both athletes are vying for their first Olympic medals, with Kim Min-sun competing in her third Winter Games and Kim Jun-ho in his fourth.
Chung Jae-won and Park Ji-woo are maintaining a strategy-focused approach, as the mass start event demands different race tactics, including energy conservation or aggressive early starts.
Those training in Korea will travel to Italy on January 30.
Korea's speed skating team earned two silver and two bronze medals at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, marking the first time since 2006 that the nation did not win a gold medal in the sport.

올림픽 출전 쿼타가 이미 네 번의 월드컵 이후 배분된 상태여서, 인첸에서 열리는 시즌 다섯 번째 월드컵에는 일부 정상급 선수들이 참가하지 않을 예정이다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 김민선과 김준호는 올림픽을 앞두고 경쟁적인 경기를 경험하기 위해 독일로 가기로 결정했다.
두 선수 모두 첫 올림픽 메달을 노리고 있으며, 김민선은 세 번째 동계 올림픽에, 김준호는 네 번째 동계 올림픽에 출전한다.
정재원과 박지원은 전략을 준비하고 있다. 매스스타트는 경주 전략이 필요하며, 일부 선수들은 초반에 에너지를 아끼고 후반에 힘을 내거나, 혹은 초반에 앞서 나가는 방식으로 경기를 펼칠 수 있다. 올림픽이 가까운 만큼 이들은 과도한 정보를 공개하지 않으려 할 가능성이 있다.
한국에 남아 훈련 중인 선수들은 1월 30일 이탈리아로 출국할 예정이다.
한국은 2022 베이징 동계올림픽에서 스피드 스케이팅 부문에서 두 개의 은메달과 두 개의 동메달을 획득했으며, 이는 2006년 이후 처음으로 올림픽에서 금메달을 획득하지 못한 기록이다.
