"My Name," the latest film from director Chung Ji-young, has been invited to screen at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film's production studios announced on Friday.
Starring Yeom Hye-ran, known for her role in the popular Netflix series "When Life Gives You Tangerines," the mystery drama will make its world premiere in the Forum section, which highlights socially engaged and adventurous cinema. Additionally, Jang Jae-hyun's supernatural thriller "Exhuma" has also been selected for the same category in 2024.
The festival characterized "My Name" as a film that sensitively explores the trauma resulting from a tragic historical legacy and emphasizes the necessity of confronting a prolonged silence, according to the production companies.
Set against the backdrop of the 1948 people's uprising on Jeju Island, the story follows an 18-year-old boy striving to dismiss a name he feels unworthy of and his mother, who must fiercely protect that name as they uncover a 50-year-old promise linked to it.
Yeom portrays the mother, who has single-handedly raised her son and is forced to confront truths buried within her forgotten memories.
The Jeju uprising began on April 3, 1948, as a demonstration against the U.S. military-led administration following Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. The government classified the unrest as a communist revolt and implemented severe crackdowns, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 14,000 to 30,000 civilians. This event is recognized as one of the most violent government responses to civilian dissent in Korean history.
The film is scheduled for local theatrical release in April.
