Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryung reached an agreement with the Philippine government to cooperate on modernizing aging farming equipment and boosting food security in the Philippines using Korean agricultural machines and knowhow. The deal was discussed during a meeting in Manila, following a memorandum of understanding signed with the Philippine department a day earlier.
The two sides expanded their bilateral partnership to cover farm machinery, seeds, fertilizer and pesticides, and agreed to reopen a joint committee on cooperation. The efforts are part of a broader push to accelerate Korean exports of related agricultural tools to the Philippines.
Song and the Philippine Secretary of Agriculture affirmed mutual interests in the growth of the agricultural sector and discussed progress on constructing an industrial complex in the Philippines to manufacture Korean agricultural machines. Construction began in December in Cabanatuan City and is slated for completion by 2034, with the facility intended to be operated by Korean developers and supported by the Philippine government to produce and distribute machines across Southeast Asia.
During her two-day visit, Song visited local businesses dealing with Korean agricultural machines and food products, including a distributor of Korean farm machines and a buyer of Korean foods. Officials noted growing popularity of Korean farm machines and K-foods while highlighting concerns about non-Korean products potentially infringing on Korean brands and planning countermeasures.
농림축산식품부 장관 송미령은 한국 기계와 노하우를 활용해 필리핀의 노후 농기계 현대화 및 식량 안보 강화 협력을 위한 새로운 합의를 필리핀 정부와 체결했다.
송 장관은 수요일 마닐라에서 필리핀 농업부 장관 프란시스코 티우 로렐 주니어를 만나 공식 개발원조(ODA) 임무를 합의했다. 이들은 하루 전 한국 측이 필리핀 부처와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결한 뒤의 만남으로, 말라카냥 궁전에서 서명된 MOU에 따라 양국 간 파트너십을 진전하기로 합의했다.
송 장관과 로렐 주니어는 농기계, 종자, 비료 및 살충제 분야까지 협력 목표를 확대하고 양자 협력위원회를 재개하기로 합의했다. 이 임무는 한국의 관련 도구 수출을 더욱 가속화해 필리핀의 농업 현대화를 추진한다는 양해의 취지에서 비롯됐다.
송은 “필리핀 정부에 필리핀 내 산업단지 건설이 계획대로 차질 없이 진행되도록 요청했고, 양국이 농업 분야의 상호 성장에 이해를 공유하고 있다”고 말했다.
공장 건설은 지난해 12월 카바나투안 시의 산업단지 내 제조공장에서 시작됐으며 2034년 완료를 목표로 하고 있다. 완공되면 한국의 농기계 개발업체가 운영하고 필리핀 정부의 지원으로 동 지역에 기계를 생산·배포하게 된다. 한국 당국은 이 단지가 한국 농기계 수출의 지역 허브로 기능할 것이라고 밝혔다.
송 장관은 화요일부터 이틀간의 필리핀 방문 첫날 현지의 한국 농업 기계 및 식품 관련 기업을 방문하고 한국 기계의 현지 유통상과 한국식품 현지 바이어를 만났다.
정부에 따르면 이 만남은 현지 시장에서 한국 농기계와 한식의 인기가 높아지고 있음을 확인했고, 현지에서 비한국인 제품이 한국 브랜드를 도용해 평판을 악용해 판매하는 위험도 파악되어 대응책을 마련할 계획이다.
