Actor Yoo Ji-tae has played a wide range of roles, from romantic leads to villains and gravitas-filled characters. He is married to actress Kim Hyo-jin and father of two. When reporters noted he seems softer than before, he smiled and asked, “Is that so?”
He stars as Han Myeong-hoe in The King's Warden, which opened Feb. 4. He said he altered his appearance for the role and gained more weight than planned; the director wanted a slimmer look, but he believed a sturdier build fit the character. He enjoys working out and the process of shaping his body when time allows.
Asked which actor he would like to work with again, he named Jeon Mi-do, praising her acting, attitude, and stage energy and saying any director would be grateful to work with her, even in an older brother or uncle role.
He expressed admiration for director Jang Hang-jun, who helmed The King's Warden, saying he is top in portraying the joys and sorrows of ordinary people. He suggested Jang could do a Korean version of Life Is Beautiful well, noting that his work can feel exaggerated yet lovable and with real depth.
As a father of two, his busy schedule has prevented him from going to the theater with his children. He hopes to go with them now that the film is out, and noted that his wife has not yet seen it either, saying raising two kids is not easy.
At home, his filmography has become educational material. His sons have watched Vigilante, Oldboy and Three Fellas. When they misbehave, he shows clips from Vigilante and jokes that they could end up like the characters.
When asked what he tells his children most often, he paused briefly before answering that he hopes they learn to share and live together with others.
Regarding his interpretation of Han Myeong-hoe, he noted that audiences find the character intimidating and said he is grateful that different directors create distinct villains; if all his characters were the same, he would not continue to receive acting opportunities.
Looking ahead, he expressed an interest in more action projects and in leading a Korean action franchise with weight and depth, perhaps a two- or three-film series. On the holiday box-office with The King's Warden, he would prefer not to compete directly, but if competition occurs, he believed the film might have a slight edge due to lower production costs and its humanity and accessibility to audiences.

또한 ‘더 킹스 워든’의 연출을 맡은 장항준 감독에 대한 애정도 깊다고 밝혔다. “일상 속 기쁨과 슬픔을 다루는 면에서 감독 장은 1위다. 그가 만든 작품은 다소 과장되게 느껴질 때도 있지만 사랑스럽고 깊이가 있다.”
두 아이의 아버지로서 바쁜 일정으로 아직 극장을 아이들과 함께 간 적이 없다고 했다. “이 영화를 발표하니 우리 가족이 함께 보러 가야 한다고 생각한다.” 또 아내인 김효진도 아직 영화를 보지 못했다고 말했다. “두 아이를 키우는 일은 쉽지 않다.”

연휴 기간 박스오피스 경쟁에 대해서는 이상적으로는 별도의 개봉일을 두고 경쟁하지 않는 쪽을 선호했으나, 만약 맞붙게 되더라도 ‘더 킹스 워든’이 약간의 우위를 점할 수 있다고 본다고 했다. 제작비가 낮고 인간적이며 관객 친화적이라는 점이 관객의 공감을 이끌어 낼 요소라고 판단했다.
