A group of victims filed a class-action lawsuit in New York on Friday seeking punitive damages over a massive data leak involving a major e-commerce company, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
The suit is led by two Korean American plaintiffs with the surnames Lee and Park, who argue that the company failed to protect personal data and implement adequate security measures, and it targets the company and its founder.
A U.S.-based law firm representing the plaintiffs said more than 7,000 individuals affected by the data leak have contacted the firm regarding the case, though the filing did not specify the exact number of plaintiffs.
The case is expected to proceed separately from lawsuits filed in other jurisdictions, including South Korea and California.
Seoul's government is investigating the data-leak incident, which is believed to have affected about 33.7 million customers.
