A Korean battery maker will acquire the remaining 49 percent stake in its Ontario-based joint venture with a multinational automaker, giving it full ownership of the operation in Canada. The deal values the stake at $100 and completes ownership of the venture that was established in 2022 in Ontario. Industry analysts described the arrangement as highly favorable, noting the initial investment in the joint venture totaled $980 million.
Under the terms, the fully owned facility will serve as a key production hub for energy storage system (ESS) batteries to meet the growing North American ESS market. Despite the ownership change, the automaker will continue to receive EV batteries produced at the plant, maintaining ongoing cooperation between the partners.
The chief executive said full ownership will enable swift response to rising ESS demand and position the company to play a leading role in Canada’s EV industry by securing additional North American customers.
The project began ESS battery production in November 2025 and is described as a turnkey facility capable of immediate large-scale output.
The acquisition is expected to improve investment efficiency, financial soundness and profitability by allowing direct access to Canadian government investment incentives and production subsidies.
Together with the deal, the company will operate three North American ESS production hubs, including two facilities in Michigan. It plans to nearly double its global ESS production capacity to more than 60 gigawatt-hours by year-end, with North America accounting for over 50 gigawatt-hours.
The plant is expected to more than double its output in 2026, achieving a utilization rate of about 70 percent and helping to reduce fixed-cost burdens.

해당 기업의 최고경영자 김동명은 "해당 합작법인의 전액 소유권 확보로 ESS 시장의 수요 증가에 신속히 대응하고 북미 기반 고객 확보를 통해 캐나다의 전기차 산업에서 핵심 역할을 할 수 있게 된다"고 말했다.
해당 공장은 2025년 11월 ESS 배터리 생산을 시작했으며, 즉시 대규모 생산이 가능한 '턴키(turnkey)' 시설로 간주된다.
이번 인수로 투자 효율성, 재무 건전성, 수익성이 개선될 것이며, 이제 캐나다 정부의 투자 및 생산 보조금을 직접 받을 수 있을 것이라고 밝혔다.
이 거래로 해당 기업은 북미 ESS 생산 허브를 세 곳으로 운영하게 되며, 두 곳의 미시간주 공장을 포함한다.
회사는 올해 말까지 글로벌 ESS 생산 능력을 60기가와트시 이상으로 거의 두 배로 확대하고, 북미가 이 중 50기가와트시 이상을 차지할 것으로 내다보고 있다.
해당 합작 벤처 공장은 2026년에 배터리 생산량을 2배 이상으로 늘려 가동률을 약 70% 수준으로 달성하고 고정 비용 부담을 감소시킬 것으로 예상된다.
