Korea confirmed its eighth case of African swine fever this year, prompting authorities to step up containment measures nationwide.
The latest case was detected at a pig farm in Pocheon, north of Seoul, which houses about 8,800 pigs. The government plans to cull the affected pigs and take steps to prevent further spread, but a standstill order for all pig farms and related facilities in and around the area is not planned because the area is already under intensive quarantine controls.
The country had confirmed its first ASF case of the year earlier this month in Gangneung after a two-month hiatus, followed by two additional cases last week in Anseong and Pocheon, both in Gyeonggi Province.
ASF does not affect humans but is fatal to pigs, and there is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease.

정부는 바이러스 확산 방지를 위한 필요한 조치를 취하고 피해 돼지의 살처분을 계획하고 있다. 다만 중앙재난안전대책본부는 이미 강화된 방역 통제 하에 있는 지역이어서 해당 농장 및 주변의 모든 돼지농장과 관련 시설에 대한 가동 중지 명령은 발령하지 않을 것으로 보고 있다.
올해 들어 첫 ASF 사례는 이달 강릉에서 확인된 뒤 두 달 만에 다시 발생한 후, 지난주에는 경기도 안성과 포천에서 각각 추가 사례가 확인됐다.
ASF는 사람에게는 영향을 주지 않지만 돼지에게는 치명적이며, 현재 백신이나 치료법은 없다.
