Seoul Players is presenting a rehearsed reading of "Acute Accent," a new play by Rory Kelly, a British playwright based in Seoul, this weekend.
The drama centers on Hig, an English linguistics professor, and Rob, an unemployed American actor, who are a newly engaged gay couple in the U.K. The arrival of their uninvited mothers triggers the revelation of a major secret, while flashbacks explore Hig’s childhood speech therapy for a lisp.
Kelly described the work as a modern drama blending humor and pathos, examining themes of family, trauma, and personal voice. He said the play was inspired by the concept of the “gay voice” and the impact of attempts to alter one’s speech to fit a masculine ideal.
This marks Kelly’s first long-form Seoul production. He is recognized as a playwright and comedian with works staged in six countries and across three continents. His prior play, "Mother and the Monster," has received extensive international performances and acclaim. He has contributed to the local theater and comedy scenes in Korea.
Kelly began drafting "Acute Accent" in 2018, noting that the script has undergone numerous revisions. He cited challenges in assembling a cast with the appropriate accents for a full staging.
Seoul Players, a prominent producer of English-language theater in Seoul, produces multiple shows annually and has presented well-received productions such as the Beckett play "Endgame." The company also runs the annual 10 Minute Play Festival.
The upcoming performance is a 90-minute rehearsed reading with five actors: Louis Groves, Laramie Wilcox, Luke Adams, Charly McQuaid, and Lorne Oliver, with Janete da Rocha as producer. A post-performance Q&A with cast and crew will follow.
