After a viral performance at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, Park Jeong-min's life took an unexpected turn.
Autograph requests surged, old friends reached out, and one message read, "Hey, you finally made it."
Park said he was baffled by the reaction.
He said he has never aimed for that kind of appeal and believes the world sometimes gives strange gifts.
He maintains a grounded outlook, saying, "This, too, shall pass."
He noted that he has "never successfully achieved anything he deliberately aimed for" and has adopted a purposeless lifestyle.
Park reflects that about 15 years of success have come as happy accidents.
A mindset of "just pulling my weight" propelled him into the spotlight.
He recalled that his breakthrough with Hwasa occurred without much thought, drawing a large reaction.
He also noted he once failed to gain admission to Seoul National University and the Korea National University of Arts, and that many calculated moves to become famous did not work out.
The moment he sets a goal, the emptiness of not reaching it can be overwhelming.
In "Humint," he plays a North Korean official opposite Shin Sae-kyeong, stepping into romance for the first time.
He said he hardly thought about acting romance while filming; the scene with the two of them in a quiet moment was particularly daunting.
He described rehearsing lines obsessively; the first line "How have you been?" set the tone for the scene, rather than loaded emotion.
When selecting scripts, Park asks, "Is this a story that needs to be told right now?"
He emphasizes that actors enact what is written, and he now favors stories he wants to see in the world, even if they do not attract large audiences.
Regarding next year, he suggested he might not appear publicly and currently has no new projects or variety appearances lined up, noting he may rest after a busy period.
Park will instead focus on his publishing house, Muje, which has three employees.
A recent bestseller gave the company some breathing room, but he cautions that the publishing market is small and difficult.
The motto is "the writer dictates our survival" and they aim to love the writer.
Park says he does not cling to popularity, and the unplanned moments that brought him here guide his current approach—walking at his own pace, hoping that continued work may attract notice again.

사인 요청이 잦아들었고 옛 친구들이 연락해 왔으며 한 메시지에는 “드디어 이뤘다”는 말이 담겨 있었다. 그러나 박정민은 그 말의 의미를 이해하지 못하는 듯했다.
그는 인터뷰에서 “그때까지 나는 도대체 무엇이었나? ‘해냈다’고 말할 만큼 얼마나 더 가야 하나요?”라고 반문했고, “사실은 아버지께서 이 관심을 사랑하신다. 나는 아직도 어리둥절하다.”고 말했다.
최근 연출가 류승완 감독의 스파이 스릴러 ‘휴민트’의 주연을 비롯한 커리어 흐름은 그를 상류권 배우로 굳혀 왔다. 그러나 팬들을 매혹시키는 ‘하트스롭’으로 불리는 위치에 대해 묻자 박정민은 고개를 저었다.
“그런 기대를 의도적으로 가진 적이 없다. 지금도 ‘목적 없이 살자’는 삶의 방식이 유지된다”고 말했다. “서울대학교에 가고 싶었으나 실패했고, 한국예술종합학교 입시도 처음에 떨어졌다. 유명해지려던 다양한 선택이 다 잘되진 않았다.”고 말했다. 또한 “목표를 세우면 그것을 달성하지 못했을 때의 공허가 더 크다. 과정의 행복을 잃는 것이 더 슬프다.”고 덧붙였다.
지난 15년간 그의 성공은 일련의 행운의 우연이었다고 설명했다. “내 몫을 다하려는 마음가짐이 주목으로 이어졌다.” 가수 Hwasa와의 무대도 특별한 생각 없이 이뤄졌으나 큰 반응을 얻었다고 말했다.
‘휴민트’에서 박정민은 로맨스라는 미지의 영역에 도전한다. 그는 북한 관리관 역을 신세경과 함께 연기한다.
촬영 중 로맨스 연기에 대해 거의 생각하지 않았고, 그 장르가 가장 까다롭고 걱정스러운 영역이었다고 회고했다.
신의 장면은 식당 뒤편에 앉아 두 사람만 마주 보는 거의 유일한 신으로 기억되며, 그 순간을 위해 대사를 집착적으로 연습했다고 한다. 그의 첫 대사는 “그동안 어떻게 지내셨어요?”였으며, 감정으로 과장하기보다 간단한 재회 인사로 분위기를 좌우하는 쪽이 더 효과적이었다고 말했다.
당시 촬영 현장을 방문한 감독과 이탈하는 현장을 보러 온 배우도 긴장한 분위기였다고 한다. 박정민은 그 순간의 톤을 결정짓는 대사를 이 신에서 집중적으로 다듬었다고 말했다.
그가 스크립트를 고를 때 주요 질문은 하나다. “지금 이 이야기를 바로 들려줘야 하는가?” 그는 “배우는 쓰인 것을 연기한다”고 전하며, 예전에는 재미있고 매력적인 역할을 선호했지만 지금은 세상에서 보고 싶은 이야기에 끌린다고 밝혔다. 설령 대중의 관심이 크지 않더라도 말이다.
앞으로의 계획에 대해 그는 본인의 출판사에 집중하겠다고 밝혔다. 현재 직원은 3명으로 늘었고, 최근의 베스트셀러로 숨통이 트였지만 여전히 신중하다고 했다. “출판 시장은 작고 어렵다. 우리가 잘하고 있다고 말하는 것은 앞서는 일이다.” 작가를 우선으로 하는 모토를 밝히며, 작가를 사랑하는 마음이 생존의 원동력이라고 했다.
인기의 급상승에도 박정민은 그것에 매달리지 않겠다고 말했다. “목표를 세우지 않던 순간과 내가 계획하지 못했던 선택들이 오늘의 나를 이끌었다.” 오늘날에도 목표보단 자신의 속도로 걷되, “계속해서 한다면 언젠가 다시 누군가가 주목할지도 모른다.”고 했다.
