The chief of the defense procurement agency attended a groundbreaking ceremony in Romania for a plant to produce K9 self-propelled howitzers, in a move tied to a major export deal signed in 2024.
The ceremony came about 18 months after a 1.4 trillion won ($1 billion) deal was signed in July 2024 to supply 54 K9s and 36 K10 armored ammunition resupply vehicles.
Under the deal, the two sides agreed to build a local production plant in Romania to strengthen bilateral arms industry cooperation and boost overseas arms exports.
“The local production of K9 self-propelled howitzers demonstrates how Korea seeks to strengthen its partner country’s arms industry capabilities,” the minister said. “DAPA will continue to support mutually beneficial cooperation for defense firms and partner countries based on localization strategies.”
As part of his two-day visit to Romania, the minister held back-to-back talks with senior government and parliamentary officials, including the defense and economy ministers, where both sides concurred on strengthening practical cooperation between the two nations.
The trip comes as Korea seeks to export the Redback infantry fighting vehicle and the K2 battle tank for Romania’s bid to modernize its armored assets.
한국 방위사업청 장관이 루마니아에서 K9 자주포 생산 공장 기공식에 참석했다고 방위사업청이 밝혔다. 이는 2024년 체결된 대형 수출 계약의 후속 조치다.
공식에 따르면, 이번 기공식은 한국의 방위산업 기업이 루마니아와 체결한 1조4천억원 규모의 계약으로부터 약 18개월 만에 열렸으며, 이 계약은 K9 자주포 54대와 K10 탄약 보급 차량 36대를 공급하는 내용을 포함한다.
계약에 따라 양측은 루마니아 내 현지 생산 공장을 설립하기로 합의했으며, 이는 양국 간 방산 협력 강화와 해외 방산 수출 증진을 위한 것으로 해석된다.
이영철 장관은 축하 발언에서 “자주포의 현지 생산은 한국이 파트너 국가의 방산 역량 강화를 추진하는 사례”라고 말했다.
또한 “방위사업청은 국내 방산 기업과 파트너 국가 간의 현지화 전략을 바탕으로 상호 이익이 되는 협력을 지속적으로 지원할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
이번 방문 일정의 일환으로 이 장관은 이틀간 루마니아를 방문하며 국방부 및 경제부를 포함한 고위 정부 및 의회 관계자들과 차례로 회담을 갖고, 양측은 양국 간 실질적 협력 강화를 위한 공조에 합의했다.
한편 한국은 루마니아의 방위 자산 현대화를 위한 사업의 일환으로 레드백 보병전투차량과 K2 전차의 수출 가능성을 모색하고 있다.
