In Milan, alpine snowboarder Lee Sang-ho will seek South Korea’s first medal at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, competing in the men's parallel giant slalom at Livigno Snow Park. Qualification is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, which is 5:30 p.m. in South Korea, and the venue is about 230 kilometers north of Milan.
Lee won a silver medal in this event at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, becoming the first South Korean to medal in a snowboarding or skiing event. At Beijing 2022, he reached the quarterfinals but was eliminated by 0.01 second. He arrives in Italy in strong form after winning gold at his final World Cup event in Slovenia on Jan. 31.
In the qualification round, competitors take two runs, with the top 16 times advancing to the elimination rounds. The event then features head-to-head knockout races on parallel courses, with two athletes competing side by side.
Lee is one of three South Koreans in the men’s parallel giant slalom, joined by Cho Wan-hee and Kim Sang-kyum. Jeong Hae-rim will compete in the women’s parallel giant slalom on Sunday.
밀라노-코르티나 동계올림픽에서 한국의 첫 메달 획득에 도전하는 이상호 선수가 일요일에 출전한다. 리비뇨 스노우 파크에서 열리는 남자 파럴렐 자이언트 슬랄프 대회에 참가하며 예선은 일요일 오전 9시 30분에 시작되고 한국 시간으로는 같은 날 오후 5시 30분에 시작된다.
이상호는 2018년 평창 동계올림픽에서 이 종목으로 은메달을 차지해 스노보드나 스키 종목에서 올림픽 메달을 획득한 최초의 한국 선수로 기록됐다.
베이징 2022 대회에서 이상호는 8강에서 0.01초 차로 패배했고, 올림픽 직전 슬로베니아에서 열린 마지막 월드컵 대회에서 금메달을 획득한 뒤 이탈리아에 도착했다.
예선에서 선수들은 각자 두 번의 주행을 치르고, 합계 시간이 가장 빠른 상위 16명이 본선으로 진출한다. 그 다음 선수들은 토너먼트 방식으로 맞붙어 두 선수가 나란히 달리는 코스에서 경기를 진행하는데, 이 형식 때문에 "병렬(parallel)"로 불린다.
이상호는 남자 부문에선 한국 선수 3명 가운데 한 명으로 참가하며, 조완희와 김상겸이 함께 한다.
