Kim Min-jae, a former shortstop who played a significant role in Korea's 2008 Olympic gold medal victory, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 53.
The Lotte Giants, the team with which Kim made his Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) debut in 1991, announced that he succumbed to cancer earlier that day.
Kim began his professional career with the Giants, his hometown team in Busan, after graduating high school in 1991. He was part of the Giants' last Korean Series-winning team in 1992 and played for the franchise until 2001.
Following his time with the Giants, Kim spent four seasons with the SK Wyverns, now known as SSG Landers, and concluded his playing career with four seasons at the Hanwha Eagles.
Over his career, Kim participated in 2,113 games, the highest number for a shortstop in KBO history and the 12th-most overall. He recorded a .247 batting average, 1,503 hits, and 174 stolen bases, and holds the record for the most sacrifice bunts in league history with 228.
On the international stage, Kim represented Korea at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006, where the team reached the semifinals, and at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, leading Korea to a perfect record and the gold medal.
After retiring in 2009, Kim transitioned into coaching, working with the Eagles, Doosan Bears, KT Wiz, Giants, and Landers. He returned to the Giants as a bench coach for the upcoming 2024 season.
During his first season on the Giants coaching staff, Kim was diagnosed with cancer. The organization chose to retain him on the payroll and reassigned him to their minor league affiliate out of respect for his contributions.
In 2025, Kim split his time between the KBO and the minor leagues but began to experience additional health issues late last year. The Giants had intended to reduce his workload this year by having him assist players in injury rehabilitation.

김민재는 KBO 역사상 최다 유격수 출전 기록인 2,113경기를 치렀으며, 통산 12위에 해당하는 .247의 타율, 1,503안타, 174도루를 기록했다. 또한, 리그 역사상 가장 많은 희생번트인 228개를 기록했고, 현재 활동 중인 선수 중 누구도 200개에 미치지 못했다.
국제 무대에서 김민재는 2006년 첫 세계 야구 클래식에서 한국 대표로 참가해 준결승에 진출하였고, 2008년 베이징 올림픽에서는 한국이 금메달을 획득하는 과정에서 9경기를 모두 승리하여 참가했다.
2009년 은퇴 한 후, 김민재는 이글스, 두산 베어스, KT 위즈, 자이언츠, 랜더스 등에서 코치로 활동했다. 그는 2024 시즌을 앞두고 자이언츠의 벤치 코치로 재합류했다.
김민재는 자이언츠 코칭 스태프 첫 해에 암으로 진단받았다. 전 선수에 대한 존경을 표하며 자이언츠는 그를 계속 고용하고 2군으로 재배치했다.
김민재는 2025 시즌 동안 KBO와 2군을 병행했지만, 지난해 말에 건강 문제를 겪기 시작했다.
자이언츠는 올해 김민재의 작업량을 줄이기로 계획하고 부상 재활 선수들과 함께 하는 작업을 맡기기로 했다.
