Korea head coach Lee Min-sung has taken responsibility for his team's disappointing performance at the AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, despite the team advancing to the knockout stage.
In their final Group C match, Korea lost to Uzbekistan 2-0, finishing the group stage with four points from one win, one draw, and one loss. Korea held 67 percent of ball possession but was outshot 4-1, managing only six attempts compared to Uzbekistan's eight.
"We were thoroughly defeated by Uzbekistan today," Lee stated in a post-match press conference. "We didn't execute the plays that we wanted to. It was disappointing, and we're going to have to regroup."
Despite the loss, Korea secured advancement due to an unexpected result in another Group C match, where Lebanon defeated Iran 1-0. This result allowed Korea to qualify for the quarterfinals, avoiding elimination.
"I think I made some tactical mistakes," Lee acknowledged. "There might have been some confusion among the players as we made lineup changes. The most important thing is to clear up those issues and prepare for our next match the best we can."
Korea struggled offensively in the group stage, failing to score in two of their three matches. They began with a goalless draw against Iran and had to rally for a 4-2 victory over Lebanon after trailing twice.
The loss of midfielder Kang Sang-yoon to a knee injury during the Iran match was a significant setback for the team. He was considered one of Korea's most talented players and had been highly regarded in the domestic league.
As Group C runners-up, Korea will face the Group D winner in the quarterfinals scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at King Abdullah Sports City Hall Stadium in Jeddah. Group D teams will conclude their matches on Wednesday, with China leading the group.
Lee emphasized the need to focus on improving his own team's performance before considering their next opponent. "The most pressing business here is we have to identify our own problems," he said. "There are so many areas where we have to get better."
