A former aide to the ex-lawmaker Kang Sun-woo appeared before police on Saturday for a second round of questioning in connection with a bribery case ahead of the 2022 local elections.
The aide, surnamed Nam, arrived at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s office at 9:49 a.m., 11 days after his initial questioning, and remained tight-lipped, covering his face with the hood of a windbreaker.
The former aide is accused of receiving more than 100 million won (about $68,170) from Kim Kyoung, a Seoul city councilor, ahead of the 2022 local elections, allegedly in exchange for her councilor nomination.
In the first questioning, Nam admitted meeting Kang but denied receiving cash, saying he was not present when the money was transferred. He later said he moved an “item” into the trunk of Kang’s car without knowing that cash was inside.
Kim reportedly told police that she personally gave the cash to Kang at a cafe in the lead-up to the elections. Kang has said she belatedly learned of the aide’s acceptance of the cash and instructed him to return it. Kang recently quit the Democratic Party of Korea after the allegations surfaced.
The police said they plan to summon Kang on Tuesday.
전 더불어민주당 소속 강선우 의원의 보좌관으로 알려진 남씨가 2022년 지방선거를 앞두고 벌어진 뇌물 의혹과 관련해 경찰의 두 번째 조사를 받기 위해 토요일 경찰 앞에 섰다.
남씨는 첫 조사를 받은 지 11일 만인 오전 9시 49분에 서울지방경찰청 청사에 도착했다.
남씨는 얼굴을 바람막이 재킷의 후드로 가린 채 취재진의 질문에 응하지 않았다.
강선우 의원의 전 보좌관으로, 2022년 지방선거를 앞두고 서울시의원 김경으로부터 1억 원이 넘는 현금을 수수했다는 혐의를 받으며, 이는 그녀의 시의원 입후보 지명을 대가로 한 것으로 알려졌다.
첫 조사에서 남씨는 김경과 강선우를 함께 만났던 사실은 인정했으나 현금 수수 의혹은 부인했고, 현금이 전달될 당시 자신은 자리에 없었다고 말했다.
그는 이후 자신이 '물건'이라고 부른 것을 강선우 의원의 차 트렁크로 옮겼다고 했지만, 그 안에 현금이 들어 있는 줄은 몰랐다고 남씨는 밝혔다.
김경은 선거를 앞두고 카페에서 현금을 강 의원에게 직접 전달했다고 경찰에 제출한 진술에서 주장한 것으로 전해진다.
반면 강 의원은 보좌관이 현금을 수수한 사실을 뒤늦게 알았으며, 이를 반환하라고 지시했다고 밝혔다.
강 의원은 이러한 의혹이 불거진 이후 최근 더불어민주당을 탈당했다.
경찰은 강 의원을 화요일에 소환할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
