The national football federation said the announcement of South Korea’s base camp for the upcoming FIFA World Cup will be put on hold pending guidance from the global governing body. The federation had planned to reveal the camp on Saturday as the team prepares to play all three group stage fixtures in Mexico.
FIFA recommended that World Cup participants withhold the announcement until base camp sites for all participating teams are finalized.
There are six World Cup spots remaining—four to be decided in European playoffs and two through interconfederation playoffs in March.
The federation had submitted its preferred base camp options to FIFA last week, including two candidate sites in Guadalajara, Mexico. South Korea will play two of its three Group A matches in Guadalajara, with the remaining match scheduled for Monterrey.
Guadalajara sits about 1,500 meters above sea level, and the head coach said a “scientific approach” should guide the selection of the base camp site and that the team should travel to the Mexican city early to acclimate to the altitude.

협회에 따르면 한국은 조별리그 세 경기 중 두 경기를 멕시코에서 치르게 될 예정이었고, 베이스캠프를 멕시코에 마련해 미국과 캐나다와 함께 대회 공동 개최국이 된 멕시코의 현지에서 홈 어웨이 형태로 운영할 계획이었다. 두 경기는 과달라하라의 Akron Stadium에서 치르고 나머지 한 경기는 몬테레이에서 치르는 것이 예정이었다.
그러나 국제축구연맹은 모든 참가국의 캠프지가 확정될 때까지 발표를 보류하라고 권고했다. 대회까지 남은 좌석은 여섯 개이며, 그 중 네 자리는 유럽 플레이오프를 통해, 두 자리는 3월에 열리는 인터콘페더레이션 플레이오프에서 결정된다.
협회는 지난주 FIFA에 베이스캠프 후보지 2곳을 포함한 선호지 목록을 제출했다. 한국은 이 중 과달라하라에 위치한 두 곳을 후보지로 제시했고, 조별리그에서 두 경기를 과달라하라에서, 나머지 한 경기는 몬테레이에서 치르는 계획이었다.
과달라하라는 해발 약 1,500미터의 고지대에 위치해 있어 홍명보 감독은 베이스캠프를 선택할 때 '과학적 접근'이 필요하다고 밝히고, 선수들이 고도에 적응할 시간을 확보하기 위해 멕시코 도시로 일찍 이동해야 한다고 말했다.
