The number of companies operating in South Korea's free economic zones rose 4.4 percent from a year earlier in 2024, with 8,590 firms operating at the end of 2024, up from 8,228 a year earlier, according to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. Employment at these firms increased 8.8 percent on year to 254,775 people as of end-2024, while investment climbed 14.4 percent to about 5.9 trillion won (US$3.99 billion).
By region, the free economic zone in Incheon accounted for the largest share of tenant companies at 44.9 percent, followed by the zone in Busan and Jinhae in the southern region at 28.4 percent, and the zone in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province in the southeastern region at 12.2 percent.
Foreign-invested companies totaled 690, up 8.2 percent from a year earlier, while their foreign direct investment rose 4.3 percent to 3.8 trillion won.
A ministry official said free economic zones continue to show steady growth and are strengthening their role as hubs for foreign investment and regional economic development. The official noted that authorities will closely identify region- and industry-specific challenges and actively support corporate activities and investment.
Free economic zones are designated areas where regulations are eased and incentives are provided to facilitate investment and operations, with the aim of attracting foreign investment and promoting advanced industries.

무역통상자원부 자료에 따르면 2024년 말 FEZ 내 총 기업 수는 8,590개로, 전년의 8,228개에서 증가했다.
이들 기업의 고용은 전년 대비 8.8% 증가한 254,775명으로 2024년 말 기준 집계됐다.
또한 투자액은 14.4% 증가해 약 5조9천억원(미화 약 39억9천만 달러)에 이르렀다.
지역별로는 서해 도시 인천의 FEZ가 임차 기업의 가장 큰 비중을 차지했고 44.9%, 남부 지역의 부산과 진해가 28.4%로 그 다음을 이었으며 동남부 도시 대구와 경상북도 북부의 FEZ가 12.2%로 뒤를 이었다.
외투기업은 총 690개로 전년 대비 8.2% 증가했고, 이들의 해외 직접 투자(FDI)는 4.3% 증가한 3조8천억 원이었다.
산업통상자원부 관계자는 "자유무역지대는 지속적으로 성장하고 있으며 해외투자와 지역경제 발전의 허브로서의 역할을 강화하고 있다"라고 말했다. "지역별 및 업종별 과제를 면밀히 파악하고 기업 활동과 투자를 적극적으로 지원하겠다"라고 덧붙였다.
자유무역지대는 정부가 규제를 완화하고 투자와 운영을 쉽게 하기 위한 인센티브를 제공하는 지역으로, 외국인 투자 유치와 첨단 산업 육성을 목표로 한다.
