Men I Trust, a three‑piece indie band from Canada known for their dreamy, jazz‑inflected minimalist sound, is returning to Korea for the Seoul leg of their Equus Asia tour. The trek is built around the band’s distinctive, understated aesthetic that blends intimate vocals with spacious instrumentals.
Following the twin album releases last year—Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus—the group plans to perform their new tracks in Asia for the first time, while also revisiting fan favorites from earlier releases. The Seoul show is described as promising a “very different show” in comparison with past performances.
Vocalist Emma Proulx expressed anticipation for the energy of performances in Seoul and noted that this marks the quartet’s fourth visit to Korea, after an appearance at a festival in 2019 and solo showcases in 2020 and 2023.
The band’s core lineup includes Emma Proulx on vocals, Jessy Caron on guitar and bass, and Dragos Chiriac on keyboards. They will launch the Asia leg in Japan before heading to Korea, with additional dates planned in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and the Philippines.
The twin albums, released in March and May last year, present contrasting moods within the band’s signature sound. Equus Asinus leans toward slower, more atmospheric textures, while Equus Caballus moves at a faster pace with brighter, more upbeat arrangements.
The album titles originated as a joking reference to Dragos’s fascination with donkeys and the idea of the Equus genome, a concept that ultimately fit the project’s overarching theme.
With 27 tracks in total, the Equus releases constitute the band’s largest project to date, featuring previously released singles such as Billie Toppy, Girl, Ring of Past and Husk, alongside newer tracks like Paul’s Theme, Frost Bite and Come Back Down, which Proulx cited as personal favorites.
Despite extensive touring, the band maintains a steady creative drive and embraces independence, avoiding external pressures and remaining open to exploring new soundscapes while preserving a minimalist, mellow sensibility.
Proulx described their workflow as introverted, with members writing in their own spaces and sharing drafts in a common online folder, then layering each element until a complete song emerges as a Men I Trust track.
She highlighted lyricism as a central strength, noting that a single well‑crafted sentence can carry the meaning of an entire paragraph and viewing such phrasing as a form of poetry.
Seoul has left a lasting impression on the group, shaped by attentive crowds and thoughtful fan interactions. Past experiences include memorable moments during their visits, reinforcing the city’s significance to the band.
After finishing the Asian leg, the group will continue the Equus tour across South America and Europe.
Looking ahead, Proulx suggested that new singles could be on the horizon, emphasizing the benefit of being fully independent—songs can be released as soon as a strong track is ready. The band may enter the studio again to pursue fresh material.
The Seoul show is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday at a major Seoul venue, with tickets starting at 99,000 won and available online.

캐나다 출신의 3인조 인디 밴드 Men I Trust는 꿈결 같은 재즈가 가미된 미니멀한 사운드로 잘 알려져 있으며, 다가오는 'Equus' 아시아 투어의 서울 공연을 위해 한국에 돌아온다.
작년 두 장의 앨범, 'Equus Asinus'와 'Equus Caballus'를 발표한 뒤, 밴드 멤버들은 아시아에서 새 트랙들을 처음으로 선보일 수 있게 되어 기대감을 표했다.
트리오의 구성원인 프루(Proulx) 외에 기타와 베이스의 Jessy Caron, 키보드를 담당하는 Dragos Chiriac은 일본에서 아시아 투어를 시작한 뒤 한국으로 건너올 예정이다. 또한 이들은 싱가포르, 말레이시아, 중국, 대만, 필리핀에서도 공연할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
지난해 3월과 5월에 발표된 이 두 타이틀의 음반은 Men I Trust 특유의 사운드를 살린 세련된 음악적 대비를 보여준다.
타이틀은 라틴어 속명 Equus에서 가져온 것으로, Asinus는 당나귀, Caballus는 말이라는 뜻이며, 두 음반 간의 분위기와 에너지의 극성을 반영한다.
Equus Asinus는 느리고 포크풍의 분위기 있는 질감을, Equus Caballus는 더 밝고 경쾌한 편곡으로 빠르게 진행된다.
음반 제목은 드라고스(Dragos)가 당나귀에 집착한다는 설명에 따라 아이디어가 나온 것으로, 프루에 따르면 "순식간의 결정이었고 그때 '와, 정말 좋다!'고 느꼈다"고 말했다.
"그 세계가 우리에게 잘 어울린다는 점이 곧 이해되기 시작했다"고 덧붙였다.
총 27곡으로 구성된 이 음반 시리즈는 지금까지 밴드의 가장 큰 프로젝트다.
앨범에는 이미 발표된 싱글 "Billie Toppy", "Girl", "Ring of Past", "Husk"가 수록되어 있으며, 새 트랙으로는 "Paul’s Theme", "Frost Bite", "Come Back Down"이 포함되어 있는데 프루가 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 곡으로 꼽았다.

완전한 독립 아티스트로서 Men I Trust는 외부의 압력을 받지 않는 것을 소중히 여겨 왔으며, 예술에 가까이 머물고 진정성을 유지해 왔다.
꿈결 같은 팝으로 자주 연관되지만, 멤버들은 특정 장르에 자신을 가두지 않고 새로운 사운드를 탐색하며 미니멀하고 차분한 감성을 유지한다. 프루는 이를 "거의 항상 같은 방식으로 작업한다"고 말하며 이른바 "내향적인 작업 방식"을 설명했다.
스튜디오에서 함께 즉흥 연주하듯 만들기보다는 각자의 공간에서 작업하고, 초안은 공유 드롭박스 폴더에 업로드한 뒤 하나씩 층을 쌓아 곡을 완성해 간다.
"Jessy가 베이스 라인을 먼저 쓰고, Dragos가 신스을 더하면, 그다음에 내가 멜로디를 부르면 곡이 만들어진다"고 프루가 설명했다.
이러한 고독한 방식에도 불구하고 결국에는 늘 Men I Trust 곡으로 들린다고 말했다.
프루는 그들의 작업을 "내향적 시간의 음악"이라고 묘사하며 조용한 내면 성찰의 순간에 잘 어울린다고 말했다.
아시아 팬들로부터 들려오는 말은 그것이 매우 위로가 된다는 것이며, 사람들이 자신과 함께 있는 데 도움이 된다고 했다.

부드러운 음향 팔레트가 밴드의 매력의 중심이지만, 가사 표현에도 큰 비중을 둔다. "한 문장으로도 모든 의미를 담을 수 있을 때가 가장 멋진 것 같다. 그것이 시다"라고 말했다.
"가사를 여전히 주목받는 것이 예술가로서의 큰 칭찬이다"라고 덧붙였다.
다년간 서울은 다양한 문화와 팬들의 생각을 함께하며 삼인조에게 오래 남는 인상을 남겼다.
프루는 팬들의 손으로 만든 트롤 인형 같은 선물을 기억하며, 관객의 차분하지만 몰입도 높은 태도를 지금도 소중히 여긴다고 밝혔다.
도시는 또한 코로나19 팬데믹이 시작되기 직전의 공연과 같이 초현실적인 순간들도 맛볼 수 있었다.
Holiday Land에서의 또 다른 기억으로는 블랙핑크의 제니를 만난 일이 있다. "그때 제니가 얼마나 큰 아티스트인지 몰랐고, 우리는 무대 전에 트레일러에서 어울리고 있었다"고 프루가 말했다.
도시를 거닐다 보니 그녀가 어디에나 있었다고 느꼈다.
투어의 아시아 일정이 끝난 뒤 Men I Trust는 남미와 유럽에서도 'Equus'를 이어 간다.
다음에 대해 프루는 새 싱글의 가능성을 암시했다.
"완전한 독립의 장점은 좋은 곡이 생기면 언제든지 발표할 수 있다는 것"이라고 말했다. "우리는 확실히 스튜디오에 들어갈 수도 있다."
