Park Yong-maan, a former chairman of one of Korea's oldest conglomerates, has made a surprising debut as a photographer with his first solo exhibition in Seoul that highlights vivid human moments.
The exhibition, titled "Human Moment," opened to the public Friday and features 80 photos taken over the past five decades; it runs through Feb. 15.
Now 71, he began taking photographs in 1975. He had dreamed of becoming a photojournalist, but his father opposed the idea, and he eventually led the family-controlled conglomerate.
It took decades for him to realize his dream of photography. In 2022, he ceased all management activities after selling all of his shares in the company.
"I picked warm and peaceful photos with traces of human beings, and most of them are ones that make me want to look again," Park said. "I have no regrets in becoming a photographer now."
He collected most of the photos for the exhibition while spending time alone in Korea and abroad, and he often photographed during business trips abroad.
Park has a strong desire to photograph people’s daily lives, saying he is not interested in avant-garde or landscape photos and prefers pictures of people he meets on the street.
He wanted the images to create empathy, guiding visitors to focus on the ordinary lives of everyday people. The exhibit includes a photo of his wife and a couple kissing in a park in Paris, which helped shape the exhibition's title "Human Moment."
He led Korea's major business lobby for nearly eight years beginning in 2013.
Since retiring, he has pledged to live a more socially meaningful life, dedicating himself to volunteer work focused on the elderly and those in need.
He said there are no plans to return to the business world or enter politics, and he intends to remain a photographer for the rest of his life.

전시는 지난 50년 동안 촬영한 사진 80장을 모아 구성되었고, 일반에 공개되었다. 전시는 2월 15일까지 계속된다.
올해 71세인 박용만은 1975년부터 사진 촬영을 시작했다. 어렸을 때는 사진기자로 활동하고 싶은 꿈이 있었으나, 가족이 지배하는 대기업 체제에서 아버지가 반대했다. 결국 그는 그룹의 경영 수장을 맡게 되었다.
그는 수십 년간의 경영 활동을 접고 2022년에 모든 주식을 매각한 뒤 경영 일선에서 물러났다.
그는 “인간의 흔적이 남아 있는 따뜻하고 평화로운 사진을 골랐고, 그 중 다수가 다시 보고 싶게 만든다”고 말했다. “사진가로서의 길에 더 이상 후회가 없다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 주로 한국과 해외에서 혼자 보내는 시간에 사진을 모았고, 해외 출장 중에도 사진 촬영 습관을 들였다.
그는 “전위적이거나 풍경 사진에는 관심이 없다. 거리에서 만나는 사람들의 일상을 사진으로 담는 것을 사랑한다”고 말했다.
전시에는 그의 아내의 사진과 파리의 공원에서 키스하는 커플의 사진이 포함되어 있어 ‘Human Moment’라는 전시 제목을 강조한다.
그는 2013년부터 약 8년간 한국의 주요 기업 로비 단체를 이끌었다.
은퇴 후 더 사회적으로 의미 있는 삶을 살겠다고 다짐했고 노인과 사회적 취약계층 지원에 중점을 둔 자원봉사 활동에 참여해 왔다.
박 전 회장은 경영권이나 정계로의 진입 계획이 없다고 밝히며 남은 생애를 사진가로 남기고 싶다고 말했다.
