South Korea finished fourth at the AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia after losing to Vietnam on penalties in the third-place match held at King Abdullah Sports City Hall Stadium in Jeddah.
The teams were tied 2-2 after 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, before Vietnam won 7-6 on penalties. South Korea was coached by Lee Min-sung, while Vietnam was guided by Kim Sang-sik.
This was Vietnam's best performance at the tournament since finishing as runner-up in 2018 under Park Hang-seo.
South Korea advanced to the knockout stage as Group C runners-up behind Uzbekistan, then defeated Australia 2-1 in the quarterfinals before losing 1-0 to Japan in the semifinals.
Vietnam won all three Group A matches, beat the United Arab Emirates 3-2 in the quarterfinals, and then lost 3-0 to China in the semifinals to set up the third-place clash.
In the final, South Korea dominated possession (approximately 75.6% to 24.4%), outshot Vietnam 12-3, and led in shot attempts 32-5 with 61 crosses to Vietnam's four, but could not break through a stubborn defense. Nguyen Quoc Viet opened the scoring for Vietnam in the 30th minute. South Korea appeared to have a penalty four minutes later after a collision, but a video review ruled out a spot kick for the trailing team. Kim Tae-won equalized for South Korea in the 69th minute, but Nguyen Dinh Bac responded for Vietnam two minutes later.
With South Korea pushing for a late winner, Nguyen Dinh Bac was shown a direct red card in the 86th minute, and Shin Min-ha equalized deep into stoppage time to send the match to extra time. The shootout remained level through the first six kicks, before Korea's Bae Hyun-seo was denied by Cao Van Binh and Nguyen Thanh Nhan converted to seal Vietnam's victory.
After the match, South Korea coach Lee Min-sung said the U-23 squad remains a work in progress and must improve composure in extra time and attacking efficiency, while Vietnam coach Kim Sang-sik praised his players and described the result as an opportunity for growth.

이민성 감독이 이끄는 한국은 정규시간 90분과 추가시간 30분까지 두 팀이 2-2로 맞선 뒤 승부차기에서 베트남에 7-6으로 패했다.
이번 대회에서 베트남의 성적은 2018년 한국 출신 코치 박항서가 이끌던 시기의 준우승 이후 가장 높은 결과다.
한국은 조별리그 C조에서 우즈베키스탄에 이어 2위로 올라와 8강에서 호주를 2-1로 이겼으나 준결승에서 일본에 0-1로 패했다.
베트남은 그룹 A에서 3전승으로 8강에 올랐고 UAE를 3-2로 이겼으며, 준결승에서 중국에 0-3으로 패해 3위전으로 향했다.
한국은 점유율 75.6% 대 24.4%, 슈팅에서 12-3으로 앞섰고 샷 시도도 32-5로 우위였으며 크로스 수는 한국이 61개로 베트남의 4개보다 많았다.
그러나 한국은 초반에 베트남의 단단한 수비를 뚫지 못했고 상대의 수비에 고전했다. 베트남의 Nguyen Quoc Viet가 30분에 선제골을 넣었다.
4분 뒤 Nguyen Dinh Bac와 Jung Seung-bae의 충돌로 페널티킥이 선언될 뻔했으나 비디오 판독 끝에 페널티킥은 인정되지 않았다.
Kim Tae-won이 69분에 동점골을 넣었으나 Nguyen Dinh Bac가 단 2분 뒤 재역전을 이뤘다.
한국이 패배 직전에 Nguyen Dinh Bac가 직접 퇴장을 받으면서 수적 열세가 되었고, Shin Min-ha의 막판 동점골로 연장전에 돌입했다.
연장전에서도 득점이 나오지 않았고 양 팀의 선발 6명이 모두 성공하는 승부차기로 이어졌다.
일곱 번째 킥에서 결정이 났고, 배현서의 슛이 Cao Van Binh에게 막히자 Nguyen Thanh Nhan이 황재윤을 좌측 코너로 보내며 베트남의 승리를 확정지었다.
경기 후 이민성 감독은 U-23 대표팀은 아직 발전 중이며 올해 대회도 금메달 4연패를 노리는 수준이 아니라 지속적인 개선이 필요한 팀이라고 말했다.
김상식 감독은 "이 선수들은 피로가 누적된 상태였지만 훌륭한 정신력을 보여줬다"며 자부심을 표했다. "정말 자랑스럽다. 이 승리를 이끈 선수들에게 축하를 전한다. 이 경기는 선수들이 성장하고 한 걸음 더 나아갈 기회가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
