Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said Saturday he has stressed to U.S. trade officials that Seoul's investigation into a major data breach at a U.S.-listed e-commerce firm, which generates about 90 percent of its revenue in South Korea, should be treated separately from broader trade issues between the two countries.
Yeo spoke to reporters at Incheon International Airport after returning to South Korea from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The minister met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the Davos forum, exchanging views on pending bilateral trade issues.
Yeo said he conveyed Seoul's position that the investigation does not constitute discriminatory treatment against the U.S. company and should not be elevated into a trade dispute, noting that authorities would have carried out the same non-discriminatory and transparent probe if a South Korean firm had experienced a similar data breach.
He also met Greer and key lawmakers from both chambers of Congress during a separate visit to Washington last week to explain Seoul's stance on the probe and address concerns about South Korea's digital regulatory environment.

그는 이 조사가 미국 기업에 대한 차별적 대우에 해당하지 않으며 무역 분쟁으로 비화되어서는 안 된다는 서울의 입장을 제임슨 그리어 미국 무역대표에게 전달했다고 밝혔다.
또한 그는 “미국 기업이어서 그런 것이 아니다”라며, 한국 기업이 유사한 데이터 침해를 당했다 해도 동일하게 차별 없이 투명하게 조사될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
또한 여한구 장관은 지난 주 워싱턴 방문 중 제임슨 그리어 미국 무역대표와 상원과 하원의 주요 의원들과 만나 서울의 입장을 설명하고 한국의 디지털 규제 환경에 대한 우려를 해소하려 했다.
