SK On announced on Thursday that it has reached an agreement with Ford Motor to terminate their three-year joint operation of BlueOval SK, leading to a restructuring of the U.S. battery manufacturing venture.
According to the agreement, both companies will independently own and operate the production facilities of the joint venture. A subsidiary of Ford will assume full ownership of the battery plants located in Kentucky, while SK On will take ownership and management of the factory in Tennessee.
SK On stated that this decision aims to strategically realign assets and production capacity to enhance operational efficiency and better respond to changing market dynamics and diverse customer needs.
The company emphasized that it will continue to maintain a strong strategic relationship with Ford, noting that the Tennessee plant is situated within the automaker’s BlueOval City campus.
“Taking ownership and control of the Tennessee plant will further strengthen SK On’s battery innovation and manufacturing leadership,” the company remarked in a press release.
SK On plans to concentrate on profitable and sustainable growth in the U.S. by supplying electric vehicle batteries to Ford and other customers, as well as energy storage systems, from its Tennessee facility.
The completion of the agreement is contingent upon customary regulatory approvals and other closing conditions, with the process expected to finalize by the first quarter of next year.
