Seoul Metro workers on subway lines 1 through 8 will commence a full strike starting with the first trains on Friday, potentially disrupting morning commutes across the capital. This decision follows the failure of overnight negotiations between the main union and management.
The Seoul Transit Corporation Labor Union, representing over 57 percent of the workforce, announced around 3:30 a.m. that final discussions with management had broken down.
Labor and management engaged in last-minute negotiations regarding wages and collective bargaining at the company’s headquarters in Seongdong District on Thursday afternoon. However, the session was adjourned after approximately 40 minutes.
Despite continued working-level discussions throughout the night, the two sides could not reconcile their differences, leading to the collapse of the main negotiations.
Separate negotiations between the company and two smaller unions are still ongoing.
As of July this year, the main union constituted 57.4 percent of unionized workers, while the second and third unions accounted for 16.4 percent and 12.6 percent, respectively.

노사 양측은 목요일 오후에 성동구 본사에서 임금 및 단체교섭에 대한 마지막 순간 협상을 진행했으나, 약 40분 만에 세션이 중단되었다.
양측은 밤새 실무 협의를 계속했지만 의견 차이를 좁히지 못하고 주요 협상을 재개할 수 없어 협상이 결렬됐다.
회사는 현재 두 개의 소규모 노조와 별도의 협상을 진행 중이다.
올해 7월 기준으로, 주요 노조는 전체 조합원 중 57.4%를 차지하며, 제2 노조는 16.4%, 제3 노조는 12.6%의 비율을 보이고 있다.
