Jockey Park Tae-jong, recognized as the “president of Korean horse racing,” concluded his 38-year career at the official retirement age of 60, achieving a record of 2,249 wins in 16,014 races, the highest in the 103-year history of Korean horse racing.
To celebrate his retirement, the Korea Racing Authority (KRA) organized a ceremony on Sunday at LetsRun Park Seoul in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. The event allowed fans to meet Park and view special exhibits highlighting his career.
Park expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, “The applause and congratulations from my fans for staying focused and giving my best have truly encouraged and moved me. I would like to thank the horse owners, trainers, stable staff, track riders, fellow jockeys and fans.”
Originally from Jincheon County, North Chungcheong Province, Park initially aspired to be an excavator operator after moving to Seoul post-high school. However, after his uncle suggested he pursue a career as a jockey, he recognized that his height of 150 centimeters could be advantageous in the sport.
Since his debut in April 1987, Park has set numerous records in Korean horse racing, demonstrating exceptional discipline throughout his career. He maintained a lifestyle free from smoking and drinking, waking up at 4:30 a.m. for training and adhering to a strict bedtime before 9 p.m.
In his final race, which took place a day after his birthday on December 20, Park finished in second place, narrowly losing to 25-year-old jockey Lee Sang-gyu, who debuted in 2022.
KRA CEO Chung Ki-hwan remarked, “Jockey Park Tae-jong is a living legend who has shared the joys and hardships of Korean horse racing for the past 38 years, demonstrating exceptional skill and professionalism. His contributions to the sport will be remembered forever.”

박태종은 "저의 노력을 인정해 주신 팬들의 박수와 축하가 저에게 큰 힘이 되었고 감동이 되었다"고 말했다. "말 주인, 훈련사, 마Stable 직원, 경주 트랙 라이더, 동료 조교사 및 팬들에게 감사드립니다."
충청북도 진천에서 태어난 박태종은 고등학교 졸업 후 서울로 이사한 뒤 굴착기 운전사가 되고 싶었다. 그러나 그의 삼촌이 조교사 지원을 제안하면서 그는 150센티미터의 키가 경마에서 강점이 될 수 있다는 것을 깨달았다.
1987년 4월 데뷔한 이후 박태종은 한국 경마에서 수많은 기록을 세웠다.
그는 규율의 모범으로 담배를 피우지 않고 술을 마시지 않았으며, 오전 4시 30분에 일어나 오전 6시부터 훈련을 시작하고 저녁 9시 이전에 잠자리에 드는 습관을 기르고 있었다.
그의 마지막 경주는 12월 20일 생일 다음 날에 열려, 2022년에 데뷔한 25세 조교사 이상규에게 2위로 밀려났다.
한국마사회 청기환 대표는 "조교사 박태종은 지난 38년 간 한국 경마의 기쁨과 고난을 나누며 뛰어난 기술과 전문성을 보여준 살아있는 전설"이라고 말했다. "그의 스포츠에 대한 기여는 영원히 기억될 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
