Korea on Monday announced that it has joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), committing to close 40 coal-fired power plants by 2040.
The announcement was made at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, making South Korea the second country in Asia, after Singapore, to join the coalition.
Launched at COP23 in Germany in 2017, the PPCA aims to phase out unabated coal power, referring to plants that do not use technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Korea, which has the world's seventh-largest operating coal power capacity, pledged not to build any new unabated coal plants as part of its membership.
The country also reaffirmed its plan to shut down 40 existing coal-fired units by 2040.
The Seoul government stated it will decide the future of approximately 20 remaining coal units after public consultations, considering economic and environmental feasibility.
A detailed plan is expected to be released by next year.
"The coal phaseout is not only necessary for the climate but also beneficial for energy security, corporate competitiveness and job creation not only for South Korea but all other countries," remarked the Climate Minister, who is leading the South Korean delegation.
On the same day, Bahrain also joined the PPCA. Although Bahrain has never operated coal-fired power plants, it pledged not to build any in the future and expressed its intention to align with the global shift away from coal.

이번 발표는 브라질에서 열리고 있는 COP30 기후 정상 회담에서 이루어졌으며, 한국은 싱가포르에 이어 아시아에서 두 번째로 이 연합에 합류한 나라가 되었다.
PPCA는 2017년 독일에서 열린 COP23에서 출범하였으며, 온실가스 배출을 줄이는 기술을 사용하지 않는 석탄 발전소의 퇴출을 목표로 한다.
세계에서 일곱 번째로 큰 석탄 화력 발전 능력을 가진 한국은 회원국으로서 새로운 석탄 발전소 건설을 하지 않겠다고 약속했다.
또한, 한국은 2040년까지 40개의 기존 석탄 화력 발전 유닛을 폐쇄할 계획을 재확인했다.
서울 정부는 경제적 및 환경적 타당성을 고려하여 향후 약 20개의 잔여 석탄 유닛의 운명에 대해 공청회를 통해 결정할 계획이다.
구체적인 계획은 내년까지 발표될 예정이다.
기후환경부 장관인 김성환은 "석탄 퇴출은 기후에 필수적일 뿐만 아니라 에너지 안전, 기업 경쟁력 및 일자리 창출에 있어 한국뿐만 아니라 모든 국가에 유익하다"고 말했다.
바레인도 월요일에 PPCA에 가입했다. 바레인은 석탄 화력 발전소를 운영한 적이 없지만, 앞으로도 건설하지 않겠다고 약속하며 석탄에서 벗어나는 전 세계적 변화에 동참할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
