Former All-Star outfielder Choo Shin-soo has made history as the first Korean player nominated for the National Baseball Hall of Fame selection. This announcement was made by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) on Monday, revealing Choo as one of 12 new candidates for the 2026 Hall of Fame ballot.
Choo, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2005 to 2020, joins 15 holdover candidates from the 2025 voting cycle. To be elected to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, players must receive 75 percent of the vote within 10 years, and at least 5 percent to remain on the ballot.
Among the first-year candidates alongside Choo are former World Series MVP Cole Hamels, ex-National League MVP Ryan Braun, and 2016 American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello.
Choo began his MLB career after signing with the Seattle Mariners out of high school as a pitcher but made his debut as an outfielder in 2005. After two partial seasons with the Mariners, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians in July 2006.
During his time in Cleveland, Choo achieved consecutive 20-20 seasons, hitting 20 home runs and stealing 21 bases in 2009, followed by 22 home runs and 22 steals in 2010. In 2013, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, he recorded 21 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 112 walks, and 107 runs scored as the leadoff hitter.
Choo's performance earned him a seven-year, $130 million contract with the Texas Rangers before the 2014 season. He had four seasons with 20 or more home runs with the Rangers and was selected as an All-Star in 2018, setting a franchise record by reaching base safely in 52 consecutive games.
In 2015, Choo became the first Asian-born player to hit for the cycle in MLB. Over his career, he played 1,652 games, achieving a batting average of .275 with a .377 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage, totaling 218 home runs, 782 RBIs, and 157 steals. He previously held the record for the most home runs by an Asian player in MLB history until surpassed by Shohei Ohtani in 2024.
Choo concluded his professional career with the SSG Landers in the Korea Baseball Organization from 2021 to 2024. He is currently serving as a special adviser to the Landers' ownership group and is responsible for player development.
The BBWAA's voting results will be announced at 6 p.m. Eastern time on January 20.
