The hit K-pop fantasy film “KPop Demon Hunters” is officially getting a sequel.
According to reports, Netflix and Sony have finalized a deal to produce the follow-up to the 2025 animated hit, with a global release planned for 2029.
The original “KPop Demon Hunters” follows three K-pop superstars — Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — who secretly battle dark forces threatening the world behind their dazzling stage personas. The film became a breakout sensation upon its release in June, making history as Netflix’s first animated film to surpass 300 million views and propelling its theme song “Golden” to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In August, a sing-along screening event brought in 19.2 million dollars in just two days, reflecting the movie’s passionate global fan base. The sing-along version recently returned to theaters for the Halloween season.
Director Maggie Kang, who visited Korea for a press conference in August, previously hinted at ideas for the sequel, stating, “We didn’t reveal the full backstory, so I already have several ideas for how it could continue.”
When asked if the male protagonist Jinu might “return” in the sequel, Kang teased, “You might think he’s gone, but who knows? Korean content tends to love tragedy,” sparking fan speculation online.
With Netflix and Sony officially onboard, “KPop Demon Hunters 2” is expected to enter production soon for a 2029 premiere.

8월 기자 회견을 위해 한국을 방문한 매기 강 감독은 속편에 대한 아이디어를 암시한 바 있다. 그녀는 그 당시 “우리가 전체 배경 이야기를 공개하지 않았기 때문에 어떻게 계속 이어질 수 있을지에 대한 여러 가지 아이디어가 있다”고 말했다.
남자 주인공 지누가 속편에 “돌아올” 가능성이 있는지 질문을 받자, 강 감독은 “그가 사라졌다고 생각할 수 있지만, 누가 알겠는가? 한국 콘텐츠는 비극을 사랑하는 경향이 있다”고 농담을 던지며 팬들의 온라인 추측을 촉발했다.
넷플릭스와 소니가 공식적으로 함께하게 되면서 “KPop Demon Hunters 2”는 2029년 개봉을 목표로 곧 제작에 들어갈 예정으로 보인다.
