The United States' chief of naval operations visited the shipyards of HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean on Saturday to assess the capabilities and potential of leading Korean shipbuilders in enhancing the U.S. Navy's battleships and naval fleet.
Admiral Daryl Caudle's visit followed the Korean government’s proposal in July for a $150 billion initiative called “make American shipbuilding industry great again" (MASGA), aimed at revitalizing the American shipbuilding sector. This initiative was pivotal in concluding prolonged negotiations regarding U.S. tariffs.
During the visit, HD Hyundai reported that Caudle and Kevin Kim, acting chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, met with HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun at the company's headquarters in Ulsan. Chung highlighted HD Hyundai’s advanced shipbuilding technologies and discussed opportunities to enhance the U.S. fleet through strategic partnerships in naval shipbuilding.
Chung guided Caudle through HD Hyundai’s commercial shipbuilding facilities and the naval division, specifically focusing on the Aegis destroyers. Caudle inspected the newly launched ROKS Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, which is the second Aegis destroyer built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and reviewed the ship's combat systems and operational features. He also observed the construction of a third Aegis destroyer set for launch next year and examined production lines for various naval vessels.
Chung stated, "HD Hyundai will support the U.S. shipbuilding industry and strengthen the U.S. Navy’s capabilities. As blood allies and close friends, we will work together to ensure the success of the MASGA."
Additionally, Caudle visited Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, where U.S. naval ships have undergone repairs. The Hanwha subsidiary's maintenance, repair, and operation (MRO) projects for U.S. warships began in August of the previous year, with notable completions including the USNS Wally Schirra and USNS Yukon. Currently, work is ongoing on the USNS Charles Drew, anticipated for completion by January.
Guided by Hanwha Ocean CEO Kim Hee-cheul, Caudle reviewed the company’s shipbuilding processes that employ automated welding systems for enhanced efficiency. The shipyard's latest factory, dedicated to constructing special-purpose vessels equipped with artificial intelligence and a "smart commander center," also attracted the American visitor's interest.
Kim expressed that Hanwha Ocean is “the most trusted partner” for the U.S. Navy and symbolizes the stronger alliance between Seoul and Washington.
The Korean engineering firms aim to expand their foothold in the global maritime sector, leveraging their shipbuilding expertise amidst the ongoing modernization of naval forces globally. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been producing warships for the Philippine Navy since 2016 and signed an agreement with the Peruvian Navy the prior year to supply vessels. Earlier this year, the company hosted the U.S. Navy Secretary at its shipyard for a tour of the ROKS Jeongjo the Great, the first next-generation Aegis destroyer.
