The SSG Landers announced the signing of Japanese pitcher Shota Takeda on Sunday, securing his services to fulfill their Asian quota for the upcoming season.
The 32-year-old right-hander has agreed to a one-year contract valued at $200,000. Takeda has been a member of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) since 2012.
Starting in 2026, teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) will be permitted to sign an additional player from an Asian country or Australia, in addition to their standard three foreign-born players.
The Asian quota player must have participated in competitions in Asia or Australia in the season preceding their signing with a KBO team. The South Korean league also imposes a $200,000 spending limit on the Asian quota player, which encompasses salary, signing bonuses, and any buyout fees paid to the player's previous team.
The Landers are the third KBO team to secure an Asian quota player this offseason, following the Hanwha Eagles and the KT Wiz, who made similar announcements on Thursday.
Takeda was a first-round pick in the 2011 NPB draft, achieving an 8-1 record with a 1.07 ERA in 11 games during his rookie season in 2012. His most successful period came in 2015-2016, where he recorded a combined 27-14 record with a 3.05 ERA. He has represented Japan in international competitions, including the 2015 Premier12 and the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
After last pitching in the NPB in 2023, Takeda missed the entire 2024 season due to elbow surgery. He returned to play this year, participating in six games for the Hawks' minor league team in the Western League.
The Landers' international scouts observed Takeda pitch in person in August and reported no concerns regarding his recovery from the elbow operation.
"We believe Takeda can join our starting rotation right away," the Landers stated. "He has an outstanding work ethic and can serve as a mentor for our young pitchers."
Takeda, who is listed at 187 centimeters on NPB's website, delivers his fastball from a high release point and features a mix of curve, slider, and forkball as secondary pitches.
This past season, the Landers had a strong one-two punch in their rotation with American pitchers Drew Anderson and Mitch White. Anderson ranked second overall in the KBO with 245 strikeouts, the second-highest single-season total in league history, achieving a 12-7 record and a 2.25 ERA over 171 2/3 innings. White, a half-Korean pitcher who missed part of the season due to injury, finished with an 11-4 record and a 2.87 ERA, recording 137 strikeouts in 134 2/3 innings.
