The Hanwha Eagles announced on Thursday the signing of Taiwanese pitcher Wang Yan-Cheng to fulfill their Asian player quota for the 2026 season, making them the first club in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to utilize the new rule.
Wang, 24, has signed a one-year contract worth $100,000. Starting in 2026, KBO clubs will have the option to sign one additional player from an Asian nation or Australia, in addition to the existing three foreign-born players allowed. This Asian quota player must have played in Asia or Australia in the season preceding their signing, and teams are limited to a total expenditure of $200,000 for the player's salary, signing bonus, and any buyout fees.
Wang previously played for the minor league affiliate of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball from 2020 to 2025, achieving a record of 20 wins and 21 losses with a 3.62 ERA over 85 games.
His standout performance came in 2025, where he posted a record of 10-5 and a 3.26 ERA over a career-high 116 innings in 22 games. In the NBP's Eastern League, Wang ranked second in wins and third in ERA.
According to the Eagles, Wang can reach speeds of 154 kph with his fastball, complemented by a sharp slider. He is known for aggressively attacking hitters and utilizes a simple, quick delivery that effectively controls base runners.
Wang represented Chinese Taipei in the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship, an under-24 tournament featuring teams from Chinese Taipei, Korea, Japan, and Australia, where he started against Korea.
In addition to the Asian player, KBO teams may sign a maximum of two foreign pitchers and one foreign position player.
In the 2025 season, the Eagles featured a formidable starting rotation with American pitchers Cody Ponce and Ryan Weiss. Ponce achieved the pitching Triple Crown, recording 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA, and a league-record 252 strikeouts, while Weiss secured 16 wins and 207 strikeouts, making them the first teammates in KBO history to each surpass 200 strikeouts in a single season.
