HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun met with India’s energy minister and senior officials on Thursday to explore deeper maritime cooperation, as India accelerates efforts to strengthen its shipbuilding capacity and expand its commercial fleet.
Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri met Chung at HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to discuss their partnership.
Also present at the meeting were the Indian Ambassador to Seoul, the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Chairman and CEO of Oil and Natural Gas Corp., the Chairman of Cochin Shipyard, and the Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority.
HD Hyundai stated that Chung guided the delegation through the research center, showcasing the conglomerate’s ship design and smart shipyard operation systems. The discussions focused on how the Korean engineering firm can implement its technologies to enhance the Indian shipbuilding industry and advance the country’s commercial fleet.
The meeting coincided with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 initiative, aimed at boosting domestic capabilities and global competitiveness in ship operation, shipyard, shipbuilding, and maritime plant sectors.
HD Hyundai reported that the Indian government plans to expand the country’s commercial fleet from 1,500 ships to 2,500 and invest $24 billion for the Amrit Kaal vision. Last month, the Indian government announced an $8 billion funding initiative for fleet expansion.
Chung remarked, “HD Hyundai will be the best partner India could hope for in supporting the Indian shipbuilding industry. We’ll continue to showcase our global leadership in the maritime industry."
Puri added, “HD Hyundai will be a key partner in realizing India’s maritime vision. We look forward to further deepening and advancing our cooperation through exchanges between the Indian government and HD Hyundai.”
The Indian delegation will continue its tour on Friday, visiting HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, where commercial and special-purpose vessels are constructed.
In July, HD Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding with Cochin Shipyard to support the Indian facility with ship design, productivity, and personnel training. The shipbuilding partnership has recently expanded to include warships.

인도의 석유 및 천연가스 장관 하르디프 싱 푸리는 경기도 성남에 위치한 HD 현대 글로벌 R&D 센터에서 정 회장과 만나 파트너십을 통해 협력 방안을 논의했다.
회의에는 인도 대사 굴랑갈랄 다스, 석유 및 천연가스부 비서 이샤 스리바스타바, 석유 및 천연가스 공사 회장 겸 CEO 아룬 쿠마르 싱, 코친 조선소 회장 마두 내어르, 그리고 딘다야알 항만청 회장 수시일 쿠마르 싱이 참석했다.
HD 현대는 정 회장이 연구 센터를 안내하며 대기업의 선박 설계 및 스마트 조선소 운영 시스템을 시연했다고 밝혔다. 회의에서는 한국의 엔지니어링 강국이 인도의 조선 산업을 개선하고 상업 선대를 발전시키기 위해 자사 기술을 어떻게 적용할 수 있을지에 대해 논의되었다.
회의는 인도가 현재 해양 아미르트 칼 비전 2047을 추진 중인 가운데 진행되었다. 이는 국가의 조선 운영, 조선소, 조선 및 해양 플랜트 분야의 국내 역량 및 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화하기 위한 정부의 카드다.
HD 현대에 따르면, 인도 정부는 현재 1,500척에서 2,500척으로 상업 선대를 확장하고 아미르트 칼 비전을 위해 240억 달러를 투자할 계획이다. 인도 정부는 지난달 선대 확장을 위해 80억 달러를 지원하겠다고 발표했다.
정 회장은 회의 후 "HD 현대는 인도의 조선 산업을 지원하는 최고의 파트너가 될 것"이라며 "해양 산업에서 글로벌 리더십을 계속 발휘하겠다"고 말했다.
푸리 장관은 "HD 현대는 인도의 해양 비전을 실현하는 데 핵심적인 파트너가 될 것"이라며 "인도 정부와 HD 현대 간의 교류를 통해 협력을 더욱 심화하고 발전시키길 기대한다"고 말했다.
인도 대표단은 금요일에 울산의 HD 현대 중공업 조선소를 방문할 예정이며, 이곳에서는 상업용 및 특별 목적 선박이 조립되고 있다.
HD 현대는 7월 코친 조선소와 양해각서를 체결하고 인도 시설에 대한 선박 설계, 생산성 및 인력 훈련 지원에 합의했다. 이 조선 파트너십은 최근 전투함으로도 확대되었다고 대기업은 전했다.
