A senior Army official has been demoted due to his involvement in the failed martial law bid proposed by former President Yoon Suk Yeol last year, as reported by sources on Friday. This action follows a reevaluation that resulted in stronger disciplinary measures.
The decision was made after Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered the retraction of a previous 10-day disciplinary action against Brig. Gen. Kim Sang-hwan, who is the chief of the Army's legal affairs office, advocating for a more stringent punishment.
The Ministry of National Defense convened a disciplinary committee earlier in the day, which issued the heavy disciplinary action based on violations of relevant legislation and the duty of diligence.
Brig. Gen. Kim was among 34 individuals traveling on a bus that departed from the Army headquarters in Gyeryong, approximately 145 kilometers south of Seoul, shortly after the National Assembly voted to lift the martial law decree. The group returned about 30 minutes later.
Initially, the military had imposed a second-lowest level of disciplinary action against Kim. However, the decision was reversed following the Prime Minister's intervention, which highlighted Kim's failure to advise the martial law commander to promptly lift the decree.
As a result of the demotion, Kim, who was scheduled to be discharged on Sunday, will retire from service with the rank of colonel, according to sources familiar with the matter.
