SAO PAULO — McLaren driver Lando Norris significantly extended his lead in the F1 championship after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday. His main rival and teammate, Oscar Piastri, received a 10-second penalty, resulting in his failure to make the podium.
Norris, who also won Saturday’s sprint race and started from pole position, achieved his first victory at Interlagos, with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finishing second and third, respectively.
Having also won the Mexican Grand Prix on October 26, Norris now leads the standings with 390 points, while Piastri, who finished in fifth place, trails by 24 points with 366 points, as three races remain in the season. Norris began the weekend leading Piastri by one point and increased that margin to nine points after the sprint race.
In a post-race press conference, Norris stated he does not consider himself in a commanding position for the title, referring to it as "just another weekend trying to win, get the most points I could.”
Piastri has faced challenges recently, being winless in six races and not reaching the podium since finishing third in Monza, Italy, two months ago.
Four-time world champion Verstappen holds third place overall with 341 points and has downplayed his chances for the title.
The weekend proved frustrating for Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who both failed to finish the race. Hamilton called it “a nightmare,” reflecting on the contrasting experiences of driving for Ferrari and the disappointments in results.
Norris secured his seventh win of the season, matching Piastri's total. When asked about his rebound in the championship, Norris encouraged ignoring critics and emphasized the long way to go in the drivers' championship.
Piastri's chances diminished shortly after lap 8 due to contact with Antonelli while vying for second position, which resulted in Leclerc’s retirement. Piastri received a time penalty for causing the collision, asserting he had no other option at that moment.
The next Grand Prix is scheduled in Las Vegas in two weeks. Norris expressed uncertainty about competing for a win there, recalling it as their worst race the previous year.
Norris dedicated his victory to Brazilian icon and Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran, who passed away in 2023, saying, “This one was for Gil, one of my mentors ... I’m sure he’d be very proud of it all.”
Verstappen, who had a challenging qualifying session and started from 16th position, finished on the podium after strategic changes made to his car. He remarked on the unexpected success of finishing from the pit lane, especially after a puncture at the start.
Verstappen celebrated his podium finish by sharing Champagne with Antonelli, who achieved the best result of his career after a close battle on the final lap. Antonelli humorously questioned Verstappen's origins in the racing scene.
Brazilian fans at Interlagos experienced disappointment starting from lap one, when rookie Gabriel Bortoleto crashed out after showcasing promising overtakes.
Bortoleto marked a significant milestone as the first Brazilian rookie to race in front of home fans since Felipe Massa in 2017.
