A handwritten letter written by Kim Soo-hyun during his mandatory military service has been made public, providing evidence that the actor did not date the late Kim Sae-ron while she was underage, according to his lawyer. This claim has been at the center of months of online controversy.

Excerpts from the letters, which exhibited a casual and affectionate tone, included sentiments such as: “I really want to write your name, but I can’t because I’m such a troublemaking soldier. I really want to say your name. I love you.” Another excerpt expressed his feelings of disillusionment in the barracks but emphasized his focus on caring for his partner.
Ko also clarified that the letter to the deceased shared by the YouTube channel was not a message to a lover, describing it instead as a reflective piece on military life and personal resolutions.
The controversy began in March, shortly after Kim Sae-ron's death, when allegations arose that Kim Soo-hyun had dated her from the age of 15 for six years. Kim has acknowledged their relationship but maintains it began after she turned 18. He has since filed defamation lawsuits against the YouTube channel and members of Kim’s family regarding the dissemination of what he claims are false statements.
In response, the channel and the family released audio recordings purportedly of conversations between Kim Sae-ron and a friend, suggesting their relationship began in middle school. Kim’s team has disputed the authenticity of these recordings, labeling them as “AI-generated fabrications.”
