A groundbreaking ceremony to initiate the construction of a gas plant in Malaysia, partially owned by Korea's state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), was held on Tuesday in the Southeast Asian nation.
The ceremony took place in Plaudinda, located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Kuala Lumpur, with the CEO of KEPCO and Malaysian government officials in attendance.
KEPCO holds a 25 percent stake in the plant, which is projected to generate up to 1,200 megawatts of electricity. The company will manage the entire process, from construction to operation, of the facility.
The anticipated revenue from the plant is estimated to reach up to 11.6 trillion won (approximately $9.3 billion) over the next 21 years.
The CEO stated that the successful construction of the gas plant would enhance trust between the two nations and provide an opportunity for KEPCO's overseas operations to gain global recognition.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Malaysia.
Additionally, the CEO met with the head of Malaysia's state-run electricity company to discuss potential partnerships in various sectors, including renewable energy.

김 CEO는 "가스 발전소의 성공적인 건설은 양국 간의 신뢰를 강화할 뿐만 아니라 KEPCO의 해외 사업이 글로벌 무대에서 인정받는 기회가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
올해는 한국과 말레이시아가 외교 관계를 수립한 지 65주년이 되는 해이다.
한편, 김 CEO는 쿠알라룸푸르에서 말레이시아의 국영 전력회사인 테나가 나시오날 베르하드 사장과 만나 재생 에너지 사업 등 다양한 분야에서의 파트너십 확대에 대해 논의했다고 KEPCO는 덧붙였다.
