After opening September with a 5 1/2-game lead over the Hanwha Eagles for first place in Korean baseball, the LG Twins have yet to secure the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) pennant, despite having just two games remaining in the season.
Following a loss to the Eagles on Monday, the Twins currently lead the Eagles by 2 1/2 games. They can clinch the top seed with a win over the Doosan Bears on Tuesday or if the Eagles lose against the Lotte Giants.
If they are unable to secure victory on Tuesday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, the Twins will have another opportunity on Wednesday in a home game against the NC Dinos.
"We tried so hard not to get to this point, but here we are," said manager Youm Kyoung-youb during a pregame media session. "Now, our biggest goal is not to have this pushed to tomorrow's game."
Despite a strong overall performance this season, the Twins' bullpen has struggled, currently holding the league's third-worst ERA for September at 6.87.
In June, the team welcomed veteran left-hander Ham Deok-ju back from an elbow injury and right-hander Yi Jung-yong from military service, but their return has not significantly improved team performance.
"When those two guys joined us, I thought we would only get stronger, but it hasn't turned out that way," Youm commented. "That's why baseball is such a tough game. Things often don't go the way we want them to. Otherwise, we'd be in first place comfortably by now."
This week, the pitching staff faced an unexpected challenge as starter Son Ju-young was sidelined by the flu. He was originally slated to start Tuesday's game, but Song Seung-ki will take the mound instead.
Youm noted that Son received IV treatment on both Monday evening and Tuesday morning. "He's going to come to the park a bit late and will play some catch indoors," Youm explained. "If he's good to go, then we will use him in later innings. If not, we will have to turn to other pitchers."
Son has had a standout season, boasting an 11-6 record with a 3.39 ERA, and he recently threw seven shutout innings in his last start on Thursday.

유 감독은 "그 두 선수가 합류했을 때 우리는 강해질 것이라고 생각했지만 그렇지 않았다"며 "기대대로 일이 진행되지 않는 것이 야구의 힘든 점이다. 그렇지 않았다면 우리는 지금 편안하게 1위에 있을 것이다"라고 밝혔다.
유 감독의 투수진은 이번 주 예상치 못한 타격을 받았다. 선발 투수 손주영이 독감에 걸린 것이다. 그는 화요일 경기에서 선발 예정이었으나 송승기로 대체됐다.
유 감독은 "그가 월요일 저녁과 화요일 아침에 IV 주사를 맞았다"며 "그가 약간 늦게 구장에 올 것이고 실내에서 캐치볼을 할 것이다. 만약 괜찮다면 후반에 활용하겠다. 그렇지 않다면 다른 투수에게 맡겨야 할 것이다"라고 말했다.
손주영은 올해 놀라운 성적을 거두고 있으며, 11승 6패, 평균자책점 3.39를 기록하고 있다. 그의 최근 선발 등판에서는 7이닝 무실점으로 막았다.
