A new therapy center for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) funded by a member of a popular music group opened Tuesday at Severance Hospital in Seoul, marking a significant advancement in integrating music and behavioral therapy in clinical care.
The Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center, named after the artist's legal name, was established with a donation of 5 billion won ($3.6 million) to Severance Children’s Hospital. The facility includes therapy rooms designed for language and behavioral support, as well as a specialized group space equipped with acoustic and soundproofing systems for music-based social therapy. Additionally, there is a comfortable waiting area for parents featuring works by an autistic artist.
The artist's involvement extends beyond financial contributions. He volunteered earlier this year, working alongside a child psychiatrist and engaging with children with autism. This experience led to the co-development of a pioneering music-based social therapy program called MIND, which is recognized as the world’s first art-integrated clinical treatment and self-reliance system at a university hospital.
The MIND program utilizes nonverbal communication through music therapy, making it particularly beneficial for children with low cognitive abilities or limited verbal responses. Children are encouraged to select instruments, express preferences, wait their turn during ensemble sessions, and engage in genuine social interactions.
International research supports the effectiveness of music therapy in enhancing self-expression and social engagement among children with autism.
A multidisciplinary team, including child psychiatrists, music therapists, speech therapists, behavioral specialists, and clinical psychologists, provides personalized treatment through collaborative case-based approaches.
Results from the program have been notable. During volunteer sessions, two children who previously showed minimal engagement in traditional speech therapy began actively selecting instruments and playing rhythms together. Another child, who was previously nonverbal and emotionally withdrawn, responded positively while collaborating with peers in saxophone performances.
The center's leader stated that the integration of music, language, behavioral, and social skills training represents a groundbreaking therapeutic model. Plans to build on this success include incorporating additional art forms and physical activities, training specialized therapists, and publishing program manuals. The center also aims to establish partnerships with autism care institutions abroad and pursue academic collaborations to globalize its approach.
“At the Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center, we not only teach children music to enhance therapeutic outcomes but also educate them on social interaction,” the center's leader remarked. “We hope that as the public witnesses these children striving for independence, perceptions of disability will change significantly.”

센터의 수장인 천근아는 음악, 언어, 행동 및 사회 기술 훈련의 통합이 세계 최초의 치료 모델을 대표한다고 전했다. 성공을 바탕으로, 센터는 다른 예술 및 신체 활동을 통합하고, 전문 치료사 훈련 및 프로그램 매뉴얼을 출판할 계획을 세우고 있다. 자폐 치료 기관들과의 해외 파트너십 및 접근 방식을 글로벌화하기 위한 학문적 협력도 진행 중에 있다.
“민윤기 치료 센터에서는 치료 결과를 향상시키기 위해 아동에게 음악을 가르치는 것뿐만 아니라 사회적 상호작용에 대해서도 교육한다.”고 천근아는 말했다. “우리는 대중이 이 아동들이 독립을 위해 노력하는 모습을 보게 되면 장애에 대한 인식이 상당히 바뀌기를 희망한다.”
