Jens Castrop, a German-born midfielder of Korean descent, has been called up to the Korean men's national football team for two friendly matches scheduled for October.
Head coach Hong Myung-bo announced the inclusion of the 22-year-old in his 26-man squad on Monday. The Taegeuk Warriors, currently ranked 23rd in the world, will host sixth-ranked Brazil on October 10 and 37th-ranked Paraguay on October 14 at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Castrop, who plays for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, made his debut for Korea on September 6 against the United States and earned his first start against Mexico three days later. He is noted for being the first foreign-born player of mixed heritage to represent Korea.
With veteran midfielder Park Yong-woo sidelined due to a knee injury, Castrop is set to make his first appearance on Korean soil next month. Park's injury, reportedly a torn ligament, may also affect his availability for the upcoming World Cup.
Hong expressed concern over Park's injury, highlighting his value to the national team and wishing him a speedy recovery. The coach acknowledged the challenge of replacing Park's defensive skills and mentioned the possibility of tactical adjustments or finding a different player to fill the gap.
Captain Son Heung-min is expected to join the national team in strong form, having scored seven goals in his last four matches for Los Angeles Football Club. Hong praised Son's scoring ability and noted that his performance is a significant boost for the team.
Son is scheduled to arrive in Korea early Tuesday after participating in LAFC's home match against Atlanta United on Sunday.
Additionally, Kim Ji-soo, a defender for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the second-tier German league, has received his first call-up since the Asian Cup in January 2024. Kim, 20, is currently on loan from a Premier League club and will be one of 11 defenders in the squad.

홍 감독은 “그가 국가대표팀에 매우 소중한 선수였기에 이렇게 심각한 부상을 당한 것이 매우 안타깝다. 빠른 회복을 기원한다. 월드컵을 준비하는 과정에서 부상은 누구에게나 일어날 수 있으며, 우리는 이러한 변수에 대비해야 한다”고 말했다.
박용우의 공백을 어떻게 메울 것인지에 대해 질문을 받자, 홍 감독은 박과 같은 수비 인식을 가진 선수를 찾는 것이 “어렵다”고 인정했다.
그는 “다른 선수로 그의 공백을 메우거나 전술적 조정을 시도할 수 있다”며 “미드필더들이 캠프에 도착하면 그들의 역할과 포지션에 대해 논의할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
LAFC의 손흥민은 최근 4경기에서 7골을 기록하며 국가대표팀에 합류할 예정이다.
홍 감독은 “그는 세계 최고의 리그에서 득점왕을 차지한 선수다. 그의 골 득점 능력에 의심의 여지가 없다”며 “그의 경기를 계속 지켜봐왔고, 그는 좋은 컨디션이다. 이는 우리에게 큰 힘이 된다”고 말했다.
손흥민은 지난 일요일 현지 시간으로 LAFC의 홈 경기에서 애틀란타 유나이티드를 상대한 후, 화요일 이른 아침 한국에 도착할 예정이다.
기타 선수들 중, 독일 2부 리그의 1. FC 카이저슬라우턴의 수비수 김지수가 2024년 1월 아시아축구연맹 아시안컵 이후 처음으로 소집되었다. 20세의 김은 프리미어 리그의 브렌트포드에서 임대 중이다. 그는 홍 감독이 소집한 11명의 수비수 중 한 명이 될 예정이다.
