<div class="editor-img-box" readability="6"><picture><img src="https://newsimg.koreatimes.co.kr/2026/06/13/411080b9-dce7-4899-825b-6723cf33395e.jpg?w=728" alt="An LAH-1 Miron chopper / Courtesy of Defense Acquisition Program Administration " decoding="async" loading="eager" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="caption" readability="7"><p>An LAH-1 Miron chopper / Courtesy of Defense Acquisition Program Administration </p></div></div><p class="editor-p">South Korea’s military has suspended flights of locally manufactured LAH-1 Miron helicopters after defects were found in engines, according to a lawmaker.</p><p class="editor-p">The defense procurement agency identified corrosion in the engines of 47 of 57 Miron helicopters assembled and supplied by Hanwha Aerospace, prompting a suspension of operations, the lawmaker said.</p><p class="editor-p">Cracks, potentially related to corrosion, were also found in the engines of 38 aircraft.</p><p class="editor-p">The engines were originally developed by Safran S.A., with Hanwha acting as the local producer and supplier of the military helicopters.</p><p class="editor-p">Officials said the defect involved the diffusers, a component that stabilizes airflow in the engines, possibly arising during the assembly process.</p><p class="editor-p">Hanwha Aerospace defended its assembly process as consistent with the original manufacturer’s requirements, noting there was no mandate to obtain additional approval from Safran.</p><p class="editor-p">The LAH-1 Miron was introduced to replace aging single-engine attack helicopters, with a plan to operate about 160 units by 2031.</p><p class="editor-p">The defense procurement agency said it will inspect and strengthen its quality management systems in response to the incident.</p>

방위 조달청은 4월에 한화에어로스페이스가 조립·공급한 미론 헬기 57대 중 엔진에 부식이 있는 47대를 발견하고 작동을 정지했다고 야당인 국민의힘의 강선영 의원이 밝혔다.
또한 부식으로 인한 균열이 발견된 차량의 엔진도 38대에서 확인됐다고 그는 덧붙였다.
해당 엔진은 프랑스 항공우주 기술 회사 사프란 사(Safran S.A.)가 원래 개발했으며, 한화가 이 군용 헬기의 현지 생산 및 공급을 담당하고 있다.
officials에 따르면 결함은 엔진의 공기 흐름을 안정시키는 부품인 확산기에서 발생했을 가능성이 있어 조립 과정 중에 생겼을 수 있다고 한다.
한화에어로스페이스는 원래 제조사의 요건에 부합하는 조립 절차라고 방어하며, 사프란의 추가 승인 여부를 요구받지 않았다고 밝혔다.
LAH-1 미론은 노후화된 500MD 및 AH-1S 코브라 단발 엔진 공격헬기를 대체하기 위해 군에 도입됐으며, 2031년까지 약 160대의 작전 운용화를 목표로 하고 있다.
방위 조달청은 이번 사건 이후 품질 관리 체계를 점검하고 개선할 계획이라고 말했다.
