<p>The National Election Commission (NEC) has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate an unprecedented shortage of ballots reported during last week’s local elections. The inaugural meeting launched the inquiry at the NEC headquarters in Gwacheon, with the committee comprising external experts tasked with identifying the cause and recommending preventive measures.</p>
<p>The controversy arose after ballot shortages were reported at more than a dozen polling stations in Seoul, prompting public outcry and calls for accountability and reforms to protect election integrity.</p>
<p>During the opening session, the committee chair stated the investigation will aim to reveal the full truth through objective and transparent findings and will hold responsible parties accountable as needed. The chair emphasized neutrality and a commitment to safeguarding constitutional values in examining the issue.</p>
<p>The six-member committee, recommended by civic organizations, media, legal, and academic communities, is scheduled to operate until June 19 to complete its work.</p>

위원회는 “사건의 전모를 객관적이고 정확한 조사로 밝히고 결과를 투명하게 공개하겠다”고 회의에서 밝혔다. 위원장은 앞으로 책임 있는 자를 엄중하게 문책하고 선거의 공정성과 무결성이 앞으로도 훼손되지 않도록 광범위한 조치를 모색하겠다고 말했다.
위원들은 또한 위원회 구성원이 “객관적이고 정치적으로 중립적인” 입장에서 이 문제를 다루고 헌법적 가치를 지키기 위한 공동의 노력으로 접근할 것이라고 강조했다.
위원회는 6월 19일까지 운영될 예정이며 시민단체, 언론, 법률 및 학계에서 추천한 전문가들로 구성된다.
