<p>A collapse at a demolition site in Seoul resulted in three deaths and three injuries among construction workers, authorities said on Tuesday.</p>
<p>The incident occurred around 2:33 p.m. at the Seosomun Overpass site in Seodaemun District, central Seoul, when part of the bridge deck caved in during safety inspection work and fell onto workers and vehicles below. Twelve workers were present at the scene.</p>
<p>Three men—one in his 50s and two in their 60s—died, and three others sustained injuries to the head, waist, ribs and other areas, with all taken to nearby hospitals. The collapse occurred during a safety assessment following the discovery of a subsidence gap earlier in the day during slab-cutting work.</p>
<p>Officials said the girders, which support the bridge deck, appeared to have collapsed while workers were inside the structure. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, and a Level 1 emergency response was issued at 2:49 p.m., mobilizing dozens of personnel and equipment. Police also cordoned off surrounding roads to prevent secondary accidents.</p>
<p>The collapse disrupted rail operations, with the national rail operator reporting a power outage in an overhead line between Seoul Station and Sinchon Station, temporarily suspending train services. President and government officials ordered prioritization of rescue and medical treatment, with calls for a thorough investigation and measures to prevent a recurrence. An emergency directive and suspension of demolition work were also issued by labor authorities.</p>
<p>In response to the tragedy, two mayoral candidates canceled campaign activities and visited the site. Officials said traffic in the area was restricted and safety measures were being heightened as recovery operations continued in coordination with fire, police and rail authorities. The exact cause and full extent of the damage will be determined through cooperation with relevant agencies.</p>
<p>Seosomun Overpass, built in 1966, spans 335 meters in length and 14.9 meters in width, supported by 18 piers connecting Chungjeongno Station and City Hall Station. Safety concerns had emerged in 2019 after concrete fragments fell from the structure, leading to its demolition, which was scheduled for completion next month.</p>
