Seoul has opened nominations for its 2026 Honorary Citizenship awards, recognizing expatriates who have significantly contributed to the city’s economic, cultural, and technological development.

The program, established in 1958, has granted the honor to 968 individuals from 100 countries over 68 years, honoring foreigners who consider Seoul a home beyond temporary postings. Candidates must have resided in Seoul for at least three consecutive years or a total of five years and must demonstrate a notable impact on local society.

The 2025 honorees included a Brazilian researcher recognized for advances in medical AI and analysis, and a German actress/director who adapted the Korean pansori tale Chunhyangjeon for modern theater audiences.

Nominations are open until July 10 and can be submitted via formal recommendations by public or social organizations or through a grassroots petition signed by at least 30 Seoul residents. A review panel and the Seoul Metropolitan Council will finalize selections ahead of an November ceremony.

The honorary title does not grant legal residency or voting rights but links recipients to the city’s governance, with many serving on municipal advisory committees and acting as global ambassadors for Seoul.
