The San Diego Padres promoted their new Korean signing, Song Sung-mun, from the minor leagues to participate in the Mexico City Series.
Song was recalled from Triple-A El Paso before the Padres faced the Arizona Diamondbacks, using the 27th roster spot allowed for international games. He had begun the season in the minors due to an oblique injury sustained in spring training.
Song expressed excitement about his promotion, noting it felt like a dream, through an interpreter. He did not start in the opening game, which the Padres won 6-4, and the series was set to continue the following day.
Looking to contribute, Song said he would do whatever is needed and referenced a hot stretch at Triple-A, hoping to translate that form to the majors. He had six hits in his last three games prior to the call-up, posting a .293/.369/.320 line with 12 RBIs in 20 games in Triple-A, though without home runs or steals.
Song previously established an All-Star pace in the Korea Baseball Organization with the Kiwoom Heroes, posting career highs of 19 home runs and 21 steals in 2024, then 26 homers and 25 steals in 2025. His oblique injury originated in Korea and was aggravated during spring training.
If Song appears in Sunday’s game, he would become the third Korean active in Major League Baseball this season in the National League West, joining Lee Jung-hoo of the Giants and Kim Hye-seong of the Dodgers, who were former Heroes teammates.

파드리스는 토요일(현지 시간) 애리조나주 스코츠데일의 솔트 리버 필즈에서 열린 애리조나 다이아몬드백스와의 경기 전에 송을 트리플A 엘패소에서 승격시켰다. 국제 경기에 대해 27번째 선수 한 명을 더 운용할 수 있는 규정에 따라, 파드리스는 송을 추가 선수로 선택했다.
송은 지난해 12월 파드리스와 4년 계약을 맺었지만, 봄훈련 중 햄스트링 부상으로 인해 시즌 초반 마이너리그에서 시작했다.
송은 통역 준이 매 وفق의 인터뷰를 통해 MLB.com에 따르면, “여기에 오게 되어 정말 흥분된다. 나에게는 꿈과 같은 일이다.”라고 말했다.
송은 토요일 시작 라인업에 포함되지는 않았고 파드리스가 다이아몬드백스를 6-4로 이겼다. 양 팀은 일요일에 다시 맞붙는다.
송은 “이 멕시코 시리즈가 이틀 정도일 수 있지만, 팀에 기여하기 위해 필요한 모든 것을 하겠다. 트리플A에서 연패를 이어가고 있던 만큼, 이 기록을 here에서도 이어가길 바란다.”라고 말했다.
송은 “내가 호출되기 전 지난 세 경기에서 6타를 기록했다. 트리플A에서 20경기에서 .293/.369/.320 라인과 12점을 기록했지만, 홈런도 도루도 없었다.”라고 덧붙였다.
송은 한국 프로야구 기아 KBO의 기사단 최강전에서 키움 히어로즈와 함께 올스타 커리어를 쌓아 2024년 19개의 홈런과 21개의 도루로 커리어 하이를 기록했고, 이어 2025년에는 26개의 홈런과 25개의 도루로 이를 넘겼다.
송은 고국에서 훈련 중 오른쪽 사구부 폴에 경미한 부상을 입었고 봄훈련 도중 재악화됐다.
송이 일요일 경기에서 모습을 보이면, 이번 시즌 메이저리그에서 뛴 세 번째 한국 선수로 기록될 것이다. 같은 내셔널 리그 서부지구에 속한 두 선수인 샌프란시스코 자이언츠의 이정후와 로스앤젤레스 다저스의 김혜성이 이미 같은 구역에 있다.
이 셋은 히어로즈와 함께 팀 동료였다. 이정후는 2023년 12월 MLB로 처음 진입했고, 이후 2025년 1월 김혜성이, 그리고 2025년 12월 송성이 잇따라 MLB에 합류했다.
