A special counsel team on Monday sought a 20-year prison term for former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae on charges of playing a key role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid and granting undue favors to Yoon's wife.
The team led by special counsel Cho Eun-suk made the sentence request during the final hearing of Park's trial at the Seoul Central District Court, saying it calls for strict judgment in order to sound the alarm on "a jurist who destroys the law."
Park is accused of playing a key role in an insurrection and abusing his power by calling a meeting of senior justice ministry officials in the wake of Yoon's December 2024 martial law declaration to review dispatching prosecutors to a martial law-supporting body, checking the capacity of correctional facilities and calling to work officials responsible for imposing travel bans.
Additionally, the former minister is accused of giving inappropriate orders to his subordinates in line with a request from Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, in May 2024, to check certain details of the prosecution's investigation into suspicions about her corruption.
Meanwhile, the special counsel team requested a three-year prison term for former Minister of Government Legislation Lee Wan-kyu on charges of giving false testimony to the National Assembly that there was no discussion of the martial law order at a meeting held at a presidential safe house immediately after the decree was lifted.
한 특수검사팀은 월요일 형사 재판의 최종 공판에서 박성재 전 법무부 장관에 대해 20년의 징역형을 구형했다. 이는 윤석열 전 대통령의 실패한 계엄 시도에 핵심적 역할을 한 혐의와 윤 전 대통령의 아내에 대한 부당한 특혜를 제공한 혐의를 포함한다. 특수검사팀은 조은숙 특수검사팀장이 이와 같이 구형했다고 밝혔다. 이는 법을 파괴하는 법조인에 대한 경고를 울리기 위한 강력한 판단을 요구하는 것이라고 주장했다. 박 전 장관은 윤 전 대통령의 2024년 12월 계엄 선포 직후 진행된 계엄 관련 회의를 주도해 계엄을 지지하는 기구에 검사 파견 여부를 검토하고, 교정시설의 수용 능력을 확인하며 travel ban 부과를 담당하는 관계자의 업무를 지시하는 등 권한 남용과 반란에 핵심적인 역할을 한 혐의를 받는다. 또한 박 전 장관은 윤 전 대통령의 부인 김건희와의 요청에 따라 2024년 5월 검찰 수사에 대한 부패 의혹 내용의 구체적 확인을 지시하는 등 부하들에게 부적절한 명령을 내린 혐의도 있다. 한편, 특수검사팀은 국회에 거짓 증언을 했다는 혐의로 이완규 전 행정법무부 장관에 대해 3년의 징역형을 구형했다. 이는 서류의 계엄령 해제 직후 대통령 관저에서 열린 회의에서 계엄 명령에 대한 논의가 없었다고 밝혔다고 주장한 것이다.
