The Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music will celebrate Mozart’s 270th birthday with a two-week program running from April 21 to May 3 in Seoul, featuring young prodigy musicians.
Since its founding in 2006, the festival has grown into a leading arts event in the city, aimed at launching young virtuosos and presenting chamber music in approachable terms.
Titled “Mozart and Prodigies,” the festival comprises 13 concerts with a record lineup of 82 artists from Korea and abroad, exploring themes of “genius” and “beginnings” rather than merely replaying Mozart’s greatest hits.

The opening concert on April 21 pairs Mozart’s String Quintet No. 5 with works by Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Franck, highlighting prodigy figures in French music history.
A program on April 22 centers on early works by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, followed by a concert on April 23 featuring Haydn and Dvorak, noted as late bloomers.
The festival’s highlight, “Family Concert: Prodigies,” on May 2 will feature seven young performers alongside senior artists, including violinist Kim Yeon-ah and pianist Lee Ju-eon.
A diplomatic thread runs through the festival, marking the 140th anniversary of Korea-France relations and featuring three French-themed programs, including “Prodiges Francais” and “La Crème de la Crème,” with repertoire connected to 1886, the year France and Korea established diplomatic ties.
The finale includes works by Chabrier, Faure, Franck and Saint-Saëns, bridging virtuosity with intergenerational mentorship and artistic transmission.
Organizers describe the festival as a platform for mentoring and heritage in chamber music, not solely a display of technical skill.

2006년 violinist이자 예술감독인 강동석이 서울시와 협력해 설립한 이 축제는 도시의 대표 예술 행사 중 하나로 성장했으며, 어린 연주자들에게 무대를 제공하고 실내악이 어렵다는 인식을 깨는 데 기여해 왔다.
“모차르트와 신동들”이라는 주제로 열린 이번 축제는 한국과 해외에서 모차르트와 관련된 82명의 아티스트가 참여하는 13개의 공연으로 이루어지며, 단순히 모차르트의 대표곡만을 재연하기보다 두 가지 핵심 키워드인 “천재성”과 “시작점”을 탐구할 것으로 알려졌다.

4월 21일 개막 공연은 모차르트의 “현악 5중주 제5번”과 프랑스 음악의 전성기로 평가되는 생상스, 드뷔시, 프랭크의 작품들을 조합해 선보인다.
이후 4월 22일에는 모차르트, 베토벤, 슈베르트의 초기 작품에 초점을 맞춘 공연이 이어지고, 4월 23일에는 하이든과 드보르 as의 “후기 작가”로 분류된 작품들을 선보인다.
가장 주목받는 무대인 ‘가족 콘서트: 신동들’은 7명의 신예 10대 연주자들— violinist 김연아, cellist 김정아, clarinetist 이도영, pianist 이주언 등을 포함—이 기성 아티스트들과 함께 무대에 오르는 프로그램으로 5월 2일에 열린다.
축제는 또한 외교적 주제를 엮어 한국-프랑스 관계 140주년을 기념한다.
개막 공연인 “프랑스의 신동들(Prodiges Francais)”, 4월 30일의 “La Crème de la Crème(최고의)” 그리고 5월 3일의 “France 1886”로 이름 붙은 폐막 프로그램은 프랑스 실내악 명작과 양국 외교 관계를 맺은 해인 1886년에 완성된 작품들을 조명한다.
피날레에는 샤브리에의 “뮌헨의 추억”, 포레의 “피아노 4중주 2번”, 프랭크의 “바이올린 소나타” 및 생상스의 “동물의 Carnival”이 포함된다.
주최 측은 이 공연이 기량의 과시뿐 아니라 세대 간 연결의 공간으로 설계되었다고 밝히며, 실내악이 멘토링과 음악적 전승의 매개체가 되도록 하려는 의도를 강조했다.
강은 어릴 때 천재로 데뷔했고 축제를 시작부터 이끌어 온 인물로서, “올해의 프로그램을 통해 관객들이 천재의 불꽃과 그 talent이 싹트도록 애쓴 많은 음악가들의 열정을 느끼길 바란다”고 말했다.
