Major telecom operators SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus are set to begin their shareholder meeting season, aiming to reshape leadership structures and advance their artificial intelligence (AI) strategies as the industry accelerates its shift toward AI-driven infrastructure and digital services.
The meetings come after a series of cybersecurity incidents in the sector, prompting increased investments in security, governance, and next-generation technologies.
LG Uplus will open the season on March 24, followed by SK Telecom on March 26 and KT on March 31. Topics will include governance reforms, shareholder return policies, and plans to expand AI businesses, alongside routine items such as board appointments and financial statements approval.
SK Telecom is expected to present an ambitious transition toward an AI-focused strategy aimed at recovering from last year’s data breach that led to a dividend suspension for the last two quarters.
The company is proposing to convert about 1.7 trillion won of capital reserves into retained earnings to fund reduction dividends, a payout not treated as dividend income for tax purposes.

KT plans to emphasize AI infrastructure, including building more than 1 gigawatt of hyperscale AI data center capacity nationwide, with aims to position Korea as Asia’s leading AI computing hub. The board is also set to add experts in AI, law, and global finance, including external directors from academic and industry backgrounds. The CEO position is also up for formal appointment amid governance changes.
KT is expected to stabilize its leadership structure while accelerating digital transformation, with the former head of KT’s enterprise division poised to become the new CEO to guide AI-focused growth and 6G network initiatives. The board will incorporate additional industry specialists to strengthen governance and technical expertise.
New outside directors under consideration include a former Intel Korea CEO, a network engineering professor, and a senior accounting expert.

LG Uplus plans to expand its data center operations, seeking shareholder approval to amend its articles to become a full-scale data center operator. The company intends to broaden its business scope to include real estate acquisition, project funding, and power-use approvals for large facilities such as its upcoming AI-focused project in Gyeonggi Province, slated for completion next year.
Additionally, LG Uplus will emphasize growth in mobile virtual network operator and enterprise infrastructure segments. The board restructuring is expected to be conservative, prioritizing financial oversight and group-level coordination as AI infrastructure investments increase.

KT 이사회는 조직 내 리더십 구조의 안정화에 집중하는 한편 디지털 트랜스포메이션을 가속화할 예정이다. 전 KT 기업 부문장의 박윤영이 공식 임명된 새 CEO로 확정될 가능성이 크며, 30년이 넘게 회사에서 근무한 경력이 있는 인물이다. 새로운 CEO는 조직 안정화와 AI, 하이퍼스케일 데이터 센터, 6G 네트워크를 중심으로 한 디지털 트랜스포메이션 의제를 추진하게 된다. LG유플러스는 데이터 센터 확장에 더 무게를 두고 주주총회에서 정관 개정 승인을 받아 데이터 센터 운영 전반을 포괄하는 사업자로의 전환을 추진할 계획이다. 향후 ЖК가 조성될 파주 AI 시설과 같은 대형 시설의 부지 확보, 프로젝트 자금 조달 및 전력 사용 승인 등도 사업 범위에 포함될 예정이다. 동시에 LG유플러스는 이동통신 가상망사업자(MVNO)와 기업 인프라 부문을 새로운 성장 축으로 재강조하고 있다. 이사회 재편은 AI 인프라 투자를 가속하는 가운데 재무 감독과 그룹 차원의 조정에 초점을 맞춰 비교적 보수적으로 이뤄질 것으로 보인다.
