Left-hander Son Ju-young will be out for 10 days with elbow inflammation, his club announced on Wednesday.
The LG Twins said Son has been diagnosed with inflammation and swelling of the pronator in his left elbow. The announcement followed his one-inning appearance in Korea's 7-2 win over Australia in the final Pool C game of the World Baseball Classic at Tokyo Dome.
Son pitched 27 pitches and worked around a single and a walk in the scoreless first inning, but returned to the mound briefly in the second before stopping warmups and asking for a trainer. After a brief on-field meeting, he exited the game.
National team officials said Son felt discomfort in his left elbow at the time. The victory secured Korea a spot in the quarterfinals in Miami, but Son did not join the U.S.-bound flight and instead traveled home for further testing.
Korea will seek to replace Son on its pitching staff ahead of the quarterfinals scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday in Miami (7:30 a.m. Saturday in Seoul).
