In the upcoming action thriller Humint, Park Jeong-min, known for versatility across indie and commercial films, is set to play a romantic lead opposite Shin Se-kyung. He portrays Park Gun, a North Korean intelligence officer who travels to Russia's Vladivostok ostensibly to monitor Hwang Chi-sung, the North Korean consul general there suspected of involvement in human and narcotics trafficking. His true mission, however, is to search for Chae Sun-hwa, a former lover with whom he broke up after a bitter dispute over Sun-hwa's father's interrogation.
"It meant a lot to me that the director saw my potential to play a romantic role and trusted me to pull it off," Park said in an interview with local reporters on Monday. "Before him, no director had taken the chance of casting me in that kind of role," he laughed.
Despite the film's strong action sequences, Park said the emotional depth and nuance are central to his performance. "The action scenes themselves were actually very safe, as they were all meticulously prepared," he said. "What was most challenging was conveying our lines and emotions in those highly charged moments."
To convincingly portray a character who grows gaunt as he wrestles with duty and affection, Park said he ran extensively every day to lose weight.
Park credited Shin Se-kyung with helping shape the romantic dynamic, describing her as possessing a natural calmness and charisma that bring out the best in her co-stars. "When she fully inhabits a character, it is as if she wields a magical power."
The actor's romantic portrayal has drawn particular attention after his duet with singer Hwasa at last year's Blue Dragon Film Awards, which quickly went viral for their chemistry and gaze. He said he remained unfazed by the memes and the nickname "nation's ex-boyfriend," noting that after 15 years in acting he was grateful for the unexpected attention and sees expanding one's scope as a positive thing.
Since his 2010 debut in Bleak Night, he has played a wide range of roles—from a pianist with savant syndrome in Keys to the Heart to dual roles in Yeon Sang-ho's The Ugly—stressing that his selection criteria focus on whether a story moves him rather than specific characters or genres. "When choosing a work, it is neither about a character nor about a genre. It is about whether a story moves my heart and is the kind I want to tell," he said.
Regarding Humint, he noted that while the film is marketed as action, the core is about sacrifice and the limits one is willing to push for another person. "It is basically a story about people and the choices they make in extreme circumstances," he said, adding that it is both resonant and entertaining.

류승완 감독의 신작 액션 스릴러 '휴민트'에서 박정민은 로맨틱한 주연으로 새로운 면모를 선보일 준비를 하고 있다. 그는 북한 정보기관 요원 박건으로 등장해 러시아의 블라디보스토프에 도착해 북한 총영사 황치성(박해준 분)을 감시하는 임무를 맡지만, 실제 목표는 인간과 마약 밀수에 관여한 혐의가 제기된 황 총영사를 조사하는 것이다.
그러나 박건의 진짜 임무는 전 연인 차은화(신세경)를 찾아내는 것이다. 두 사람의 관계는 차은화의 아버지가 잔혹하게 심문당한 사건으로 악화된 뒤 끝났다고 설정된다.
박정민은 "감독이 내 로맨틱한 역할 가능성을 보고 그것을 소화해낼 수 있다고 믿어 준 것이 큰 의미였다"고 현지 기자들과의 인터뷰에서 말했다. "그 앞에 그런 역할을 맡아 본 감독은 없었다"고 웃으며 덧붙였다.
그는 "액션 신 자체는 모두 체계적으로 준비돼 있어 실제로는 안전했다"고 설명하며, "가장 도전적이었던 것은 격렬한 순간들 속에서도 대사와 감정을 설득력 있게 전달하는 것이었다"고 말했다.
