Steve Yoo, also known as Yoo Seung-jun, a Korean American singer, rapper, and actor, has been banned from entering South Korea for over two decades due to allegations of draft evasion. Recently, he has teased a new music release in collaboration with rapper JUSTHIS, raising questions about a potential attempt to resume his activities in Korea.
On Monday, Yoo posted a video on his YouTube channel showcasing his work in a studio with JUSTHIS, along with the caption, “HOME HOME (YSJ Version) unreleased. YSJ X JUSTHIS M/V coming soon!” This announcement follows his previous feature on JUSTHIS’ track “Home Home” from the album “LIT,” prompting speculation about his possible comeback in the K-pop scene.
Yoo became embroiled in controversy in 2002 when he traveled to the United States for performances just before his scheduled military conscription and later acquired U.S. citizenship, renouncing his Korean nationality. In response, the Ministry of Justice banned him from entering South Korea that same year. He has only been able to visit the country briefly in 2003 for a family funeral.
Throughout the years, Yoo has pursued legal avenues to return to South Korea. He applied for an overseas Korean (F-4) visa in 2015, which was denied. Following a lawsuit, he secured a ruling from the Supreme Court in his favor. However, the Korean Consulate General in Los Angeles subsequently denied his visa again, leading to a second lawsuit, which he also won at the Supreme Court level.
Despite the judicial victories, the consulate denied his visa application for a third time. Yoo has now initiated a third lawsuit against the consulate and the South Korean justice minister in a continued effort to overturn the entry ban.
