Former President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the final hearing of his insurrection trial at the Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday. The court is expected to deliver a verdict following a sentencing demand from a special counsel team, which has called for the death penalty due to Yoon's failed martial law imposition.
Cheong Wa Dae expressed its expectation that the judiciary will render a verdict that aligns with legal principles and meets public expectations. This statement was made shortly after the special counsel's sentencing request was announced.
The special counsel's demand follows Yoon's declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, aimed at eradicating anti-state forces. The ruling Democratic Party described the sentencing request as a "commonsense conclusion," emphasizing the importance of accountability for actions that threaten the constitutional order and the sovereignty of the people.
DP spokesperson Park Soo-hyun stated that the court should impose the most severe consequences without leniency, reflecting the expectations of the public.

청와대는 화요일, 특별검사가 그의 실패한 계엄령 발동과 관련하여 사형을 구형한 후, 법원이 전 대통령 윤석열에 대한 판결을 법과 공공의 기대에 부합하는 방식으로 내릴 것으로 기대한다고 밝혔다.

특별검사 팀은 재판의 최종 심리에서 2024년 12월 3일 당시 대통령이 반국가 세력을 eradicated 시킬 목적으로 계엄령을 선언한 지 1년이 조금 넘은 시점에 윤 전 대통령에 대해 사형을 구형했다.
여당인 더불어민주당은 이 구형 요청을 "상식적인 결론"이라고 평가했다.
더불어민주당 대변인 박수현은 "법이 헌법 질서를 파괴하고 국민의 주권을 무력으로 뒤엎으려 한 행위에 대해 가장 혹독한 책임을 물을 것이란 선언"이라고 논평했다.
그는 "이는 공공의 기대에 부합하는 상식적인 결론"이라며 "법원은 판결에서 관대를 허용해서는 안 된다"고 덧붙였다.
